CART has cancelled the race at Road America for 2003. The track hasn't paid its final sanctioning fee installment from last year or the first downpayment for 2003 which was due Jan 1st. On Friday, the track supposedly sent a check for 2003 fees to CART, but it wasn't received. Some sources say CART refused the check (rumor). My personal opinion is RA signed the contract and has to agree with those terms. They should have consulted CART at the end of 2002 if there was gonna be problems making payments. Milwaukee's CART race hasn't had this situation and they have less attendance!! However, with the decline of CART to NASCAR in the last few years, I do believe the track sanctioning fees and ticket prices are too high. Eight-ten years ago it was appropriate but not in 2003. I'm talking about a slight decrease not a 35% discount. However, the race might get reinstated if both sides can work out their differences. You can vent through e-mail to Road America or CART. Here are some links about the cancellation: CART statement RA statement Sheboygan Press Seventhgear.com CART forum (03-11-03) UPDATE: Autoracing1.com in their rumors section says it has good word that the CART race at RA is reinstated and both lawsuits dropped. No official word yet. (04-23-03) UPDATE: Road America and CART have reached a compromise and have restored the race for this year and 2004. Thanks to Mario Andretti who worked hard to get both sides to agree on their differences. The race will be called the Mario Andretti Grand Prix at Road America. (04-23-03)
