Midwest Sprint Car Association (MSA) will be the sanctioned Outlaw Sprint Car Series at Wilmot in 2004! The Wisconsin based series will compete Saturday Nights in 2004 at Wilmot. The trucks are in action, and yes, turns three and four are being banked for 2004. Wilmot Speedway (11-24-03)
The Raceway at Powercom Park and the Powercom Speedzone held their 2003 Racing Season Awards Banquet at The Golf Club at Camelot in Lomira on Saturday November 8. The top five in the weekly divisions were honored. The sponsors, fans, drivers, car owners and all who supported the two tracks during the season were thanked. Once again another fine race season has come and gone and with Jack Frost nipping at our ears the warm memories of summer are all that remain of the 2003 race season. Brian Birkhofer Racing announced today that their long sponsorship relationship with Seubert Calf Ranches of Dorchester, WI will end after the 2003 season. "Mike (Seubert) and I talked on the phone the other day and he made it known that he wanted me to switch chassis for next year," said Brian from is race shop on Monday. "I am not going to switch from MasterSbilt Race Cars because they have been a major factor in the success that I have had the past couple of seasons. Auto racing fans were disappointed at Tuesday's Plan Commission meeting, but they're already planning another campaign to save Angell Park at the City Council meeting next week. The commission voted to change the city's master plan and annex property just south of Firemen's Angell Park Speedway where a housing development is proposed. Race fans fear complaints from new neighbors about noise at the track could shut it down. The changes were approved 6 to 3. Wisconsin State Journal (11-13-03) UPDATE: Race fans in Sun Prairie can now cheer as loud as they want, thanks to an agreement that silenced concerns about a planned new development south of the Angell Park Speedway. According to Sun Prairie Mayor Dave Hanneman, park management met with site developer Roy Yunker and city and school officials throughout the day Tuesday to hammer out the compromise, which was unanimously approved by the City Council later that evening. A reliable source tells us Doug Mahlik will be back at WIR in 2004 in a Late Model. (10-23-03) UPDATE: Doug tells us he is putting togethor a deal to run 4 or 5 Nascar Craftsman Truck Series races. He would also like to race weekly at WIR, if you know a team that is looking for a driver, Doug is very interested. With new officers involved with the Fox River Racing Club this has sparked the interest of teams that had decided to run other tracks, but would like to return to WIR. Mike Reichenberger tells us he would definately like to return to WIR weekly in 2004. Mike tells us he still has his lefthander, but is looking for a partner or sponsors to complete the package. Just returned home from the Fox River Racing Club's meeting. Alot of things were discussed, the hot topic was the crate engine. What the club officers would like to do is have someone test a crate engine in their limited late model car for the full season to see how the engine runs against the spec and ported head engines, possibility of the engine being run in the late model to test it. There will be a weekly program once again on Thursday nights, it will be put togethor by Dan Lewis Photography. There is talk of running the full May schedule on Sunday's in 2004. Have heard alot of compliments on how the meeting was run by the new president. (11-17-03)

George Schultz Motor Sports plans to run at Madison International Speedway in 2004 in the Midwest Sportsman Division. Figure 8 racer Tom Lamers died suddenly on Monday, November 10, 2003 as the result of a traffic accident. He enjoyed racing in Slinger, going to his cabin in Pickerel, spending time with family and friends and his recent adventure began this past August when he purchased his first Harley. Hearing that Matt Maynard was suppose to make an announcement yesterday as far as who his driver will be for the 2004 season. The word we have been hearing is the Maynard team will return to WIR in 2004. The person that was rumored to be the driver that was going to be announced we had been told his plans were set months ago. We are checking into this to see what the word is (11-11-03) Driver Announced: Rod Wheeler will drive for Matt Maynard Motorsports at WIR in 2004, car will carry the #96. The car will be sponsored by Fireside Hearth & Home and Azteca Mexican Restaurant. Terry Baldry will drive Matt Maynard's second car sponsored by Heat N Glo at other area tracks special races.(11-12-03) UPDATE: We are told this whole deal just came about in the last week as Rod was all set on piloting the #5 Donagene Motorsports car until he was offered the Maynard Motorsports ride. We are told that the #5 Donagene Motorsports car will be completed as Rod's brother Bob will run it occasionally in 2004. (11-12-03)
Matt Kenseth became the second former Wisconsin International Raceway driver to win the NASCAR Winston Cup points title by finishing fourth in Sundays Pop Secret 400 at North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham, N.C. That just shows the caliber of talent coming out of the short tracks in Wisconsin, said Dave Valentyne, WIR events director. Matt Kenseth won the 2003 Winston Cup Championship. As Matt took the championship he made Wisconsin International Raceway the ELITE track is Wisconsin. Wisconsin International Raceway is the only track in Wisconsin to have 2 (Matt and Alan Kulwicki) track champions move on to win a Winston Cup Championship. (11-09-03)
The 53 (BreweCrew) race team has relocated over to the western part of Wisconsin. The motor is in to be freshened at "Competition Specialist", and the car is ready for a new front stub. The team worked out of a temporary shop this past week, as we are waiting to close on a new facility that will house the team in 2004. We are all energized about the new shop, as it's location and visibility should be advantageous for our upcoming season. Many of our crew members live in Menomonie, and we will be within reasonable travel distance to many Midwest raceways. Enrollment for the FRRC-4-Kids (2004 Season) has begun . The Kids Club is for ages 6-12. Information sheets will be available at several local business'. Cory Podolski has stated he will run the USPRO Cup series in 2004, looks like Brent Strelka will also run this series in 2004. Familiarity breeds success for NASCAR Winston Cup driver Matt Kenseth and crew chief Robbie Reiser. "We have a great relationship," said Reiser. Truck series championship contender Ted Musgrave battled cancer early this season, his team owner revealed Saturday. "We were winning races while he was going to the doctor on Monday getting chemotherapy," Jim Smith, owner of Ultra Motorsports, said in an interview with a publicist for Dodge. The 36-year-old sanctioning body has established a minimum base for the 2004 event payout and points fund for the new ASA Late Model Series. These established amounts have the potential to rise with the addition of sponsorships of awards and other special programs. The competitors in the ASA Late Model Series will receive an impressive 41-percent increase in the 2004 event purses. If competitors compete in all events, they will receive a bonus at the awards banquet beyond their payout in the final points standings of $100 per event. If they compete in 80 percent of the events, they would receive a bonus that would be half of what the full-season bonus would be. Full Story - ASA Racing (11-26-03)
For the first time in its history, the American Speed Association will incorporate double-file restarts to its events. The double file aspect has always been in effect at the start of an ASA event, but beginning with the 2004 season that will apply also to restarts. The newly applied restart rule states that when the field is shown one lap to go before returning to green-flag conditions and reaches a designated point announced at the drivers, crew chiefs and/or spotters meeting(s), drivers will elect to move to the inside file or outside file for the restart of the race and will close the gap to the car immediately in front of them. In fact, a bunch of folks, both in the grandstands and in the pit area after the race, swore Rogers was a lap down if not more. Everybody was out there slippin and slidin except for the car that won the race; he ran as fast on the last lap as he did the first lap. I dont like it. Five of the six announced ASA Late Model Series dates are companion events to the ASA Racing Series, taking place on the same day as the nationally touring ASA Racing Series feature event. These events are set for Lake Erie on Saturday, May 29, Mansfield on Saturday, June 5 Berlin on Saturday, June 12, Toledo on Saturday, July 24 and Indianapolis Raceway Park on Saturday, July 31. Hearing Clint Bowyer has been talking to Childress about driving the #21 Reese's RCR Busch Chevy in races that Kevin Harvick doesn't compete in. Jayski (11-07-03) UPDATE: Clint Bowyer, a 24-year-old star on dirt and paved tracks in the Midwest, will test Sunday with Richard Childress Racing in Lakeland, Fla., hoping to team with Winston Cup star Kevin Harvick in RCR's #21 Busch Series entry in 2004. Bowyer has been on hand with the #21 team all weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. "We were racing some ARCA races and I think we caught Richard's eye. Then I got a call and here I am," Bowyer said. The 2004 ASA Racing Series schedule has been completed with the final two pieces of the puzzle. The legendary Toledo Speedway in Northwest Ohio along with the .686-mile Indianapolis Raceway Park will host the ASA Racing Series for July events next season. ASA Racing (11-19-03)

Some Pre 2004 ITEMS Notes: 1999 champion crew chief, Bruce Carlson, was helping to call the shots for Hoffman at Irwindale. Carlson is a candidate for the #8 Crew Chief job in 2004. Was Irwindale the final race for Tim Schumacher, the owner of Jon Lemke's K.C. Colors entry? "We've got new sponsors coming on board next year and we're excited about that," said Diercks. The United States Auto Club, sanctioning body for 171 racing events at the Milwaukee Mile between 1956 and 1993, will return in 2004 as part of the July 23-25 Indy Racing League weekend at the storied oval. The USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Series and the USAC National Midget Car Series are slated for competition on the 1-mile paved oval, with a 25-mile Midget Car feature and a 100-mile Silver Crown main event. Effective immediately the nearly two-year old USPRO Cup Series will be known as the ASA Late Model Series. The name change was expected following the mid-September announcement that the American Speed Association had assumed controlling interest in the Michigan-based Super Late Model Series. The ASA Late Model Series is expected to conduct between 12 and 15 events and will initially be in Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. ASA Racing (11-12-03)

Ron Breese Jr. took the Elite Series victory in the Toyota Allstar Showdown. Ron won the qualifier on Friday Night and started on the pole for the feature event this evening. Ron took the lead and led up to lap 75 when there was a break, with the invert Ron started in the 4th position and quickly retook the lead and never looked back. Ron collected a check of 12,000 dollars, received the use of a Toyota Tundra for a full year and will have a trophy with his name on it in Daytona USA next to the Daytona 500 trophy. Ryan Hanson finished 4th, Steve Carlson finished 5th while Justin Diercks and Jon Lemke finished in the top 10. This race will be an annual event with Toyota sponsoring it. (11-08-03)
The International Truck and Engine Midwest Series drivers did a great job in the qualifying races for the Toyota Showdown at Irwindale Speedway. Ron Breese Jr. took the win in the first qualifying race with Ryan Hanson and Justin Diercks finished in the top 5. In the second qualifying race Jon Lemke took the lead, but was unable to hang onto it. John came in second while Jeremy Lepak finished in the top 5. All Midwest series drivers finished in the top 11 in the first qualifying race and top 12 in the second qualifying race. Complete results should be available tomorrow. Toyota Show Down Notes: Butch Hanson had been battling Bladder and Kidney cancer for 14 years until just a couple of days ago, Butch had his kidneys removed. He is at home resting comfortably but has to rely on dialysis until he can receive a transplant. Scott Hansen (no relation to Ryan Hanson), a veteran of the Midwest short track wars with 10 Midwest Series wins, is mentoring Jeremy Lepak (#67 Metro Milwaukee Auto Auction Chevrolet) this weekend. Steve Carlson (#66 Wilson Oil Chevrolet) and Eric Fransen (#16 Sonyas Rose Chevrolet) shared a hauler to truck on out to Irwindale. Brian Hoppe and his wife Bobbi are expecting their second child in June. Justin Diercks (#29 Adrian Carriers Chevrolet) and his team had their new truck broke down on the ride from Iowa to California, and had to fix that on the road. In an announcement we broke here on 51 late last week, Go Go Motorsports will be parting ways with legendary ASA crew chief Howie Lettow and veteran crew member Ron Tretow for the 2004 season. The team will move the entire operation to South Carolina, where driver Toby Porter lives. It will be run out of Porters shop located in Greenville (SC), less than a mile from Greenville-Pickens Speedway. Speed 51 (11-04-03)

We are told that Wisconsin International Raceway (WIR) will host two International Truck and Engine Corporation Midwest Series (ITEMS) races in 2004. Coleman Racing Products announced a major contingency program with the Yellow Book USA Midwest AllStar Racing Series late model drivers at the series banquet Saturday night at the Leathem Smith Lodge in Sturgeon Bay. Contingency awards posted for every Yellow Book USA MARS race in 2004 include $1,000 for each feature win and $250 for each fast qualifier. A total of $122,540 in point fund money and contingency awards were presented at the Yellow Book USA Mid-American Stock Car, Super Truck and Midwest AllStar Racing Series banquet Saturday night at the Leathem Smith Lodge in Sturgeon Bay. Jeff Van Oudenhoven of Kimberly, WI topped over 150 different drivers to capture the Midwest AllStar Series title. Jamie Iverson of Escanaba, MI, second place finisher in the late model division, took home the biggest single prize of the night. He won the JW MotorSports/A-1 Auto Parts sponsored late model racing engine. The top eight late model drivers in points had their names placed in a hat and Iverson was the winner. Andy Petree Racing [APR], which ran driver Paul Menard in a partial schedule of ARCA, Truck Series, Busch Series and Cup races this season, has signed Menard to a three-year deal that could move the 23-year-old to the Cup series by 2006. APR's plan for Menard is to run for rookie of the year honors in Busch next season, run a second season in the series in 2005 and, if both parties agree, move to Cup in 2006. Eddy McKean of Jerome, Idaho finally claim the prize that has eluded him over the last three years, a winner's trophy from Phoenix Int'l Raceway. McKean led the final twelve laps en route to a .158 second victory over Jeff Jefferson in the Cruise America "125" in the NASCAR Elite Division, Featherlite Southwest Series finale. Steve Carlson, Eric Holmes, and Brian Hoppe rounded the top five finishers Thursday afternoon. The ASA Racing Series in preparation for its 37th season of competition is releasing 13 event dates of a planned 18 for the 2004 season. Travis (Kittleson) has made a name for himself within the ASA Series and is setting his next goal on driving a few NASCAR Craftsman Truck races in the near future, with his sights on Busch and Cup when the time is right. Travis (Kittleson) ended the 2003 ASA Series 2nd in Rookie points and 9th for the season.
