The name Joe Roe has become synonymous with the term Champion and for a good reason. After the 2002 season ended, Roe was even contemplating hanging up the helmet. As the season entered the final month, Roe found himself in a familiar position. On top of the IRA points standings with Scott Neitzel close behind. Dodge County's rain out brought the points chase down to the final race of the season and when the checkered flag fell for the final race of the season, Joe Roe once again was headed to victory lane as the IRA's Champion for the 9th time. A graduate of the mini-sprint ranks, Mike Kertsher made the move to the traveling 410 series as a teammate to Kim Mock. Although competition for the Rookie of the Year title fell by the wayside early in he season, Kertscher was not content to simply sit back and coast to the title. He qualified for all but 4 A Mains all year long (19 of 22 run), racking up nine top 10 finishes including a win at the Wilmot Speedway, earning him the title as King of Wisconsin Sprint Car Racing. The Annual Frank Filskov Memorial Fall Classic is an event that hold the highest respect for those competing on the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint tour, and on Saturday night, Todd Hepfner added his name to the illustrious list of winners at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds, picking up his 3rd win overall in 2003. Ty Bartz from nearby Howards Grove started the evening off on a special note by picking up his 1st career fast time award in front of friends, family and sponsors with a tour of the track in 11.907 seconds. Bartz's celebration was short lived however as his #75 broke a spindle during his heat race and relegating him to the B-Main and out of the invert for the A Main. Hepfner pulled away in the feature as they encountered lapped traffic and he had to fight to hold off a charging Donny Goeden, who started 8th in his Schroff Motorsports #9G. Following Goeden was Joe Roe, who started 13th and claimed his 9th Championship title. IRA Plymouth results Paul Pittman column IRAsprints.com (09-23-03)

Scott Neitzel was able to take full advantage of an opportunity when it knocked on the door Saturday night at the Grant County Speedway, picking up his second IRA victory of the 2003 season in his R R & H Enterprises #2W maxim. The annual Labor Day event for the Bumper to Bumper Outlaw Sprints saw a total of 33 sprinters in the pit area of the southwest WI facility. On a restart, pole sitter Raymond Hensley charged to the point, leading the field into turn 1. Hensley's #7D would wash out in turn 2, handing the lead to Neitzel. At Cresco, Iowa Sunday night, Ricky Logan, who inherited the pole after Brian Brown's re-draw, knew he would have to make the most of his start with the caliber of the field behind him. Joined by many of Knoxville's top guns, the Cresco show always brings out the best in everyone. Logan never looked back to pick up his second IRA victory of the 2003 season. At the Powercom Speedzone in Oshkosh on Labor Day, John Haeni visited victory lane for the 2nd time in his 410 racing career, his first coming at Superior (WI) over 3 years ago. "You earned this one," team owner Rob King told his driver in victory lane. He wasn't kidding either. Haeni battled tooth and nail, using all of his experience and talent to hold off Mike Reinke and Todd Hepfner. Joe Roe has has taken over the points lead heading into next weekend at Superior and Cedar Lake. Unfortunately, Kim Mock continues to recover from injuries from the Knoxville Nationals in August, but is expected to return to action hopefully at Superior. He tried racing at Lancaster Saturday, but still wasn't 100% and failed to transfer through the B-main. At Cresco and Oshkosh he decided to sit out and prepare for the last four events of the season. Scott Neitzel, Todd Hepfner, John Haeni, and Kim Mock round out the top 5 in current points. Results: Lancaster - Cresco - Oshkosh - IRA point standings - Irasprints.com (09-03-03)
