Dirt Racing
With only two race events in and two rainouts, Saturday nights race event at Thunderhill Raceway needed to get in a show. The track was smooth and tacky all night even with intermitten sprinkles though much of the heat races. But mother nature moved in about 9pm and washed out all but one of the feature events. Friday race goers were greeted with sunshine and warmer weather for the racing festivities at the Speedway. The WISSOTA Late Model Feature was won by Tim Buhler; Wade Schutt was the winner of the IMCA Modified Feature. The IMCA Stock Car Feature was won by Shannon Volkman, the WISSOTA Street Stock Feature went to Scott VanProoyen, and the Truck Feature was won by Sean Thayer. Press Release (05-30-04)
Former track champion RM Van Pay of Green Bay ducked underneath race leader Chad Wilcox of Pulaski on a lap three restart and survived several caution periods to capture the 25 lap IMCA modified feature at Luxemburg Speedway Friday night. Van Pay also won his heat race, scoring the clean sweep. Shawn Kilgore of Kewaunee matched Van Pay's accomplishments, copping his heat and winning the 22 lap IMCA stock car feature by a full straightaway in a race that went green-to-checkered without a caution. The only time Greenfield's Chris Carlson has seen Luxemburg Speedway was on a videotape of a late model race run at the third-mile clay oval back in 1988. He was a crew member for driver Cindy Peterson at the time. Carlson will get an up close and personal look at the track Friday June 11 when the Wisconsin Dirt Late Model Association (WDLMA) invades Luxemburg for the Seubert Calf Ranches "Battle of The 'Burg III" beginning at 7 p.m. Press Release (05-26-04)
Flooding weekend rains coupled with little drying time left the Powercom Speed Zone under water and forced the cancellation of Tuesday nights racing program. The track will be back in action on Tuesday night, June 1st with a full program highlighted by the Budweiser Modifieds, American Auto Sales Street Stocks, Miller Lite Grand National Stock Cars, and the Signmakers/Corporate Impressions Dirt Devils. After two cancellations, the Langlade County Speedway held its 2004 season opener on Friday night. A large crowd, and a filled pit area battled the cold weather to witness some great racing action. The new clay on the racing surface provided for a smooth and very fast track. Feature winners included Gordie Seegert Jr. in the WISSOTA Late Models, Wade Schutt in the IMCA Modifieds, Shannon Volkman in the IMCA Stock Cars, Gary Kasperek in the WISSOTA Street Stocks, and finally, Sean Thayer in the Truck division. Sturgeon Bay's Thunderhill Raceway has officially called it an official rainout just moments ago. Tonight was to be their third night of racing on the third-mile clay oval. According to "Woody" Wodack, "The track was worked heavily this week and was going to be in great shape with a little help from Mother Nature, but it didnt come this weekend." Fans of high powered race cars will get their fill on Memorial Day at The Raceway at Powercom Park as the track plays host to Glen Hepfner Incorporated Twin 30s, a doubleheader program featuring the Interstate Racing Association sprint cars and Wisconsin Dirt Late Model Association super late models. Both divisions will compete in a full program. Twin 30-lap feature races will highlight the evenings activities. Officials at Luxemburg Speedway are proud to announce that the Wisconsin Dirt Late Model Association (WDLMA) will play host to the third annual 40 lap "Battle of the 'Burg" on Friday, June 11 sponsored by Seubert Calf Ranches of Dorchester, WI. The race will feature a mix of eastern Wisconsin's local favorites along with a strong contingent of Milwaukee-area racers, many of whom may be making their first ever appearance at the semi-banked, third-mile clay oval. The Wisconsin Dirt Late Model Association (WDLMA) made its debut at the Powercom Speed Zone and the largest crowd of the year was there to welcome them. As a reward to the fans, the drivers put on a great show in every division. Thirty one late models would register to compete, but in the end it was a familiar face from the Modified division that would capture the first ever feature win in the WDLMA as Tim Lemirande captured his first late model feature win. The record books were wide open at the Dubuque Fairgrounds when the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series hit the 37 year old facility. Although the IRA had scheduled races at the venue in past year, weather problems had always plagued the event so Sunday nights show marked the first ever visit by a sprint car series to the track. Terry McCarl timed in the second half of cars and established a track record at 12.865 seconds, besting Jason Johnson by .031 seconds. The time trial session was marred by the nights hardest crash when Brent Laursens car broke while at full throttle on the backstretch, sending him into a bone-jarring crash which ended in the infield area. Laursen was transported to a locale medical facility where he was treated for a fracture in his hand. Heat race winners included Joe Roe, Jason Johnson, Mike Kertscher and Craig Dollansky. Terry McCarl grabbed his 1st win of the 2004 season at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night as the defending track champ picked up the win on Maytag Night and night number one of the IRA vs Knoxville Chalenge series. McCarl, who is also an IRA member had a busy weekend with the IRa as he also promoted the Oskaloosa show the night before. "I got to drive the McCroskey Pace Truck for the IRA last night so I lead just about every race. Tonight, I only lead one but it was the most important one!" stated McCarl after the race. Because of the number of cars on hand ( 65 - 410s plus 43 - 360s), a passing points qualifying system was used for the 5 heat races. Heat race winners included: Travis Cram, Skip Jackson, Jesse Hocket, Jesse Giannetto, and Jason Solwold while Jeremy Campbell and Calvin Landis picked up the B-Main wins. Two of the brightest talents on the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series will compete at The Raceway at Powercom Park on Tuesday night, June 22nd as Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne take part in the Prestige Custom Cabinetry Superstar Showdown. Stewart and Kahne will compete in the Suburban Motors Modified division that night and be part of the $2000-to-win 40-lap feature event which highlights the program. Also competing that night will be Gibbsville Cheese Legend Cars and Wallys Auto Dirt Devils. Racing will commence at 7:00 pm. Press Release (05-19-04)
Tim Lemirande of Verona made a triumphant return to the Powercom Speed Zone Tuesday night as he won the inaugural Wisconsin Dirt Late Model Association feature to highlight a full night of action. Joe McGrath of Milwaukee won his first ever Budweiser Modified feature race at the track while Trevor Schmidt topped the American Auto Sales Street Stock main. Saturday nights race event at Thunderhill Raceway came pretty close to being a washout with the wet track conditions early today and poor drying conditions. But the race fans came out in good numbers to watch over 100 cars compete and those same race fans were treated to some fine racing tonight and were on their way home by 9:30 pm. Jay Schraufnagel of Beaver Dam slipped past Lee Sohns of East Troy to take over the lead on lap 4 of the 20-lap Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson/Buell Modified A-Main. That would not be the last Schraufnagel would see of Sohns however, as Sohns would run strong right behind over the next few laps. As the race moved past the halfway point Sohns not only was on Schraufnagels tail, but began to engage in a heated battle for the top spot. Press Release (05-16-04)
#25 Danny Schlafer won the MSA season opener at Wilmot Speedway Saturday night. Heat race winners included #2 Joe Wipperfurth,#71 Doug Schenck,#99 Michael Emme, and #5s Scott Sipple. Kerry Madsen bested a packed field of 58 Winged sprinters
for the Searsboro Telephone Spring Challenge which was sanctioned
this year by the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series. Madsen turned in
a lap of 15.750 seconds in the Vermeer #55 and was the only one to break the
15 second barrier. Heat race winners included Madsen, Randy Anderson, John Vandenburg
and Travis Cram while Jerrel Slinkard picked up the last chance race. Jason

For the second time in three weeks, track officials at Luxemburg Speedway were forced to pull the plug on the planned Friday night stock car races due to inclement weather. Steady rains Thursday night and into Friday morning gave officials no choice but to cancel, amid a soaked pit area and equally-drenched race track. Press Release (05-14-04)
Some of the country's top modified race car drivers will converge on The Raceway at Powercom Park May 22nd and 23rd as the United States Modified Touring Series presents the Prestige Custom Cabinetry Open Wheel Weekend. Two full racing programs will be contested on the high banked 1/3-mile clay oval with the USMTS modifieds headlining each night. Also on the card each evening will be the Dodge Central Credit Union Street Stocks, Gibbsville Cheese Legend Cars, and Wally's Auto Dirt Devils. Last week Beaver Dams Jay Schraufnagel started on the pole of the modified feature at the Powercom Speed Zone. He easily won the main event. Schraufnagel would start ninth Tuesday night but that didnt matter as he took the lead just four laps into the feature and drove on to his second straight win at the track. Terry Van Roy of Appleton topped the 20-lap Grand National main while Eric Barth of Sauk City won the INEX Legend Car feature. Gary Neau won the 20-lap street stock feature race. Rainy weather forced the cancellation of The Golf Club at Camelot 100 Night at the Raceway at Powercom Park in Beaver Dam, WI on Saturday. Racing will resume this coming Saturday night with the Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson/Buell Modifieds, the Dodge Central Credit Union Stocks, the Gibbsville Cheese INEX Legends, the Northwoods Paper Converting Grand Nationals and the Wallys Auto Dirt Devils set to provide the racing action. Algoma's Todd "Felix" Dart led wire-to-wire and survived late race challenges from Scott Mullen and Jared Siefert to win the 25 lap IMCA modified feature at Luxemburg Speedway Friday night. An opening night record 132 cars were on hand. The field included 38 IMCA modifieds, 38 IMCA stock cars, 17 IMCA hobby stocks, 21 street stocks and 18 sport fours. Press Release (05-7-04)
Hometown boy Scotty Neitzel was sizzling hot on a very cold Wisconsin night as he dominated the Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprints headliner on the big Dodge Co. Fairgrounds half-mile located just a few short miles from his home. Neitzels' night wasn't all perfect however as he changed engines following qualifying despite timing in third quick. The rest of the night was all his, dominating the second half of the 20 lap A-main aboard his R & H Enterprises Hoosier shod Maxim equipped with a Charlie Fisher powerplant. The A got off to a rough start as outside front-row starter Steve Meyyer got sideways entering the first turn and was hit hard by a charging Kim Mock resulting in Meyer flipping hard ending his night and Mock having to make hasty repairs before he could restart from the tail. Hepfner, Biertzer, Davis, and 24th starting John Haeni wowed the crowd with their battle for second. "I wish we could race here every week", stated a jubilant Neitzel in victory lane. Jay Schraufnagel drew the pole position for the season opening Budweiser Modified feature race Tuesday night at the Powercom Speed Zone. The checkered could have been thrown then. In the end, it played out as expected as the dominant driver in the division at the Speed Zone over the past three years notched yet another victory as he dominated the event to highlight the Karavan Trailer Sales Icebreaker 75. Other feature winners on the evening included Trevor Schmidt of Hartford in the American Auto Sales street stocks, Bob Cullen of Chilton in the Miller Lite Grand National Stock Cars, and Dustin Schwandt in the Corporate Impressions Dirt Devils. One hundred fourteen cars were on hand for the Karavan Trailer Sales Icebreaker 100 regular season opener at the Raceway at Powercom Park in Beaver Dam, WI on Saturday night. Dennis Schultz of Oshkosh jumped into the lead at the start of the 20-lap Suburban Motors Harley-Davison/Buell Modified A-Main. Schultz was quickly challenged by Andy Voigt of Beaver Dam. The two engaged in a fierce battle for the top spot with Voigt moving out front on lap thirteen. Schultz quickly answered with a pass using the outside groove to retake the lead a lap later. Voigt continued to put heavy pressure on Schultz trying several times to move into the top spot. Press Release (05-2-04)
Saturday nights race event at Thunderhill Raceway, went on despite cool wet weather conditions just days before the scheduled season opener. All of the tracks five racing divisions had good opening night car counts at both the car show and Saturday nights races. A total of 109 cars graced the pits and started the heat events. Fans were treated to the largest ever car show on the midway on Saturday afternoon. But it was the WDOR 93.9 FM season opener that night that got the 2004 season off on the right foot for some while tricky for others. In two separate main events, drivers IMCA Hobby Stock driver Casey Groessl and Sport Four Ryan Johnson escaped serious injury after flipping their mounts on the rough, third-mile clay surface. Asphalt Racing
Beautiful weather and a nice crowd were both on hand at Norway Speedway this past Friday night. Over 130 cars, along with a strong Wisconsin contingent, that included Pepsi late model drivers Doug Mahlik, Jim Duchow, Matt Derricks, Ryan Manthei, and Mike Reichenberger. Fittingly, the event was put on by Crivitz Wisconsins Gateway Bar and Frank Porth Chevrolet Veteran Bruce White won the Pepsi late model dash over Peanut Stankowicz. John Novara, returning from a horrific crash on opening night, won the fast heat. Dave Adams of Niagara, Wi won his heat race as did Brian Suehs of Menonimee. Press Release (05-31-04)
Matt Derricks is starting to get the hang of racing a Limited Late Model while running events at Norway Speedway. Matt has run both races at Norway so far this season and has qualified 15th and 17th and had to run the semi feature both times. The first week he started last in a 14 car field and was making a pass for 3rd when he was bumped out. This week he started 12th in a 13 car field and was making the pass for 4th when he was again bumped out of the way. He restarted from the back and made his way up to a 6th place finish. (05-31-04)
Lowell Bennett to return to WIR on Thursday Nights? It appears that could be something that will happen at least a couple times this season. There was a segment on this evening's news on WBAY TV 2 in which they interviewed Lowell. He stated that the club officers stopped out at his shop a couple weeks ago and asked him to come back. Lowell said he is looking at running a couple Thursday nights and seeing on that goes and he could end up returning. (05-17-04) YES: Sources tell us that they spoke with Lowell Bennett on Wednesday and Lowell stated that he will be returning to run a Fox River Racing Club event on either June 3rd or June 10th. We understand it will be a handful of events that he will run this year, he won't race every week due to his work schedule. (05-31-04)
Sources tell us that Brent Strelka took the Limited Late Model feature win Friday Night at Dells Motor Speedway. The team had planned to run 3 nights in a row at different tracks, but that failed to happen when State Park Speedway rained out on Thursday and Saturday at Marshfield for the Mid-State Touring Series got rained out. An update on Stan Gracyalny recovery after his bypass surgery that he has a couple weeks ago. We are told that Stan had a set back and had to be taken to a Milwaukee Hospital for emergency surgery. Stan almost had to have a leg amputated, but they were able to get the emergency surgery done soon enough. Stan is back at the hospital in Appleton and seems to be doing very well at this time. The races for the Fox River Racing Club for Sunday morning have been rained out due to heavy rains and more rain expected during the day. The next race for the Fox River Racing Club will be June 3rd with qualifying at 5:30 and Racing at 7:00PM. (05-22-04)
Madison International Speedway will not take part in the Miller Lite Nationals with Slinger Speedway this season, track promoter Roy Kenseth said. Instead, MIS will hold the Miller Lite Classic Aug. 10, which will consist of an American Speed Association Late Model Division race featuring defending NASCAR Cup champion Matt Kenseth. The winner will receive $12,000. "Basically (the format was changed) because the super late model guys at Madison don't race at Slinger," Roy Kenseth said. "We were paying out a $30,000 point fund and it goes to all the Slinger drivers. It ended up pretty much being a Slinger national instead of a combination. Wisconsin State Journal (05-21-04)
If you have been around asphalt racing for any length of time you know that the #8 of Mike Butz Racing is always a prominent car every week. One can't help but notice how the team seems to be struggling this season. I know I have overheard people mentioning this very same question. I ran into Mike Butz the other evening and he said they have had a shock fail on them 3 weeks in a row. (05-20-04)
tell us they overheard it mentioned that Brandon Blashe will race a Late Model during the Red, White and Blue Series at Wisconsin International Raceway this season. No mention of what car he might be driving, we are sure we will receive some more details on this. (04-20-04) UPDATE: Brandon tells us he is working on a deal to run the Red, White and Blue Series at WIR in a Late Model, he should know if it's a done deal by the end of April at which time he will release the details. (04-21-04) UPDATE 2: Brandon tells us he will drive for Mark Schuda who owned the car Matt Van Elzen drove last season. They are planning on running the Red, White & Blue Series, although the Red race is questionable do to the repair work that needs to be done from the crash last season. They are also planning to run 1-2 times at Norway and maybe Plover. In total the team will run between 5-6 races and see where that leads for next season, although there is no plan at this time. Town and Country Ford helped kickoff Norway Speedways 34th season this past Saturday afternoon. 2003 track champion Kris Kelly picked up where he left off last season as he won the Pepsi late model dash. John Komp won the Auto Value super stock dash but suffered engine problems in the process. The Pepsi late model feature was won by Midwest racing standout Jim Duchow of Appleton, Wisconsin. Ten-time WIR champion Terry Baldry of Omro was second followed by Peanut Stankowicz of Escanaba. Dick Coleman and Dave Adams rounded out the top five. Press Release (05-18-04)
Three of the top drivers in the NASCAR Midwest Touring Series couldnt catch Rod Wheeler. Neither could anybody else. For the second Sunday in a row, the 43-year-old driver from Appleton, who lives in Hortonville, made it look easy as he breezed to victory in a late model stock car feature at Wisconsin International Raceway. Last Sunday, Cal Harrell nearly won his first limited late model feature race at Wisconsin International Raceway. This week, there were a few more anxious moments, but he got it done. Ever since I was a little kid, I dreamed to be sitting up here, said Harrell, while accepting a trophy in Victory Lane. With the extra money being paid out for the feature winners on May 23rd, it is bringing out some of the bigger names of the sport. The Late Model Feature will pay $1700 to win, which is sponsored by CJ Ritz, Femals Auto Body, Consolidated Construction, and WIR. The Limited Late Model Feature will pay $1000 to win, which is sponsored by Country Side Bar, and WIR. We understand Steve Carlson will be back for that event as will alot of the Autozone Midwest Series Drivers who are racing on Memorial Day at WIR. (05-16-04)
Pete Berken was racing out at Wisconsin International Raceway driving car #04 in the Limited Late Model Division. The car carries a paint scheme very familiar to the scheme his last Late Model had. We have no been able to find out anymore details on this as to whether he will race weekly or what. (05-16-04)
We understand Jason Vandenberg will be out at Wisconsin International Raceway weekly driving in the Late Model division from this point forward. The team raced today at WIR in the Spring Classic, but had some troubles. The team said they wrecked the rear stub during practice before the season and have just finally gotten the car finished. Its only fitting that the Fox River Racing Club is starting a kids club in the stands. It has one on the track. The limited late model class alone has five 18-year-old drivers wholl graduate from high school this year. Returning drivers in the class are Cal Harrell (Kaukauna), Kyle Calmes (Freedom) and A.J. Miller (Clintonville). Moving up to the limited class are Wisconsin sport truck champion Dan Hansen (Chilton) and street stock rookie of the year Matt Derricks (Appleton East). As much as Ron Breese Jr. the racecar driver wanted to make a full-season run in 2004, the realist in the DeKalb, Ill., native resisted the temptation. After longtime sponsor EWT Inc. told Breese they wouldn't be back on his car this year, Breese decided to sell all but one of his late model cars and become a driver for hire. "We lost our primary sponsor, and I'm not spending my own money to go racing anymore," Breese said. "It's been 14 years since I've been racing and we've been pretty good. And to not have a sponsor ... I'm not going to do it on my own." Wisconsin State Journal (05-17-04)
Norway Speedway will be kicking off its 34th season with a rare Saturday afternoon show. Qualifying will begin at 8:30 am for the fabulous 4 cylinder division and the Pepsi Late Models and Auto Value Super Stocks will time in at 11:30. Racing is set to begin at 1:00pm. The Town & Country Ford season opener is the first of 18 events planned at the speedway this summer. Highlighting the season will be the Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper challenge series that has three races that pay $1000 to win and another $1000 to the overall champion. While the Fox River Racing Club takes a weekend off, Wisconsin International Raceway in Buchanan will hardly be idle. Following high school drags on Friday and Summit Super Series drag racing on Saturday, on Sunday afternoon, the Yellow Book USA Midwest AllStar Racing League will hold its first of four races at the track. Watch out, the Wheelers and Regeths are together again. Back in 1972 and 73, local racing legend Roger Regeth won a lot of races and even a championship on dirt tracks in De Pere, Shawano and Seymour in cars owned by Rod Wheelers father. Sunday at Wisconsin International Raceway, the partnership came full circle as Wheeler won his first race for Matt Maynard, his car owner, who is Regeths stepson. Although he didnt plan it that way, the old NASCAR bump and run carried Gary Bock to victory and spoiled what might have been have a banner day for one of the Fox River Racing Clubs new young guns. Bock of Little Chute dived under Cal Harrells car in turn two on lap 14 and went on to win Sundays 20-lap limited late model feature at Wisconsin International Raceway. Advanced Racing will be transporting "Goldie" to her first race at Norway Speedway. Dick has competed at the speedway several times throughout his short track years. It'll be good to see some familiar faces from the good ole days as well as some of the competitors that will be competing in the special event. The trophy Chris LaRocque got for winning the Fox River Racing Clubs limited late model feature at Wisconsin International Raceway on Sunday made a nice get-well present for someone special to him. LaRocque, who intends to make only about half the races this year, started from the pole and led for all 20 laps in the feature, holding off last years points runner-up Tom Gee Jr. and former late model driver Tom Spierowski at the end. The 30th season of Fox River Racing Club got underway this afternoon. In Late Model action it was Mike Gardner taking fast time with a lap of 19.393 which is a record lap for the Fox River Racing Club event. Heat 1: Rod Wheeler taking the win over Tom Hockers, Jim Duchow and Terry Korth. Heat 2: Andy Monday taking the win over Eddie Muenster and Pete Vandermolen Jr. In the fast dash it was Mark Schroeder holding off Terry Baldry with Jeff Van Oudenhoven and John Meidam rounding out the top 4. In semi feature it was Jim Duchow driving his backup car taking the win over Eddie Muenster and Tom Hockers. The feature event was a great race with Terry Korth leading for much of the race before being passed by eventual winner Jeff Van Oudenhoven. Top 9: 1. Van Oudenhoven, 2. JJ Smith, 3. Terry Baldry, 4. Heavy rain washed out the Yellow Book USA Super Truck 50-lap race Saturday night at Pepsi Raceway Park in Tomahawk. A good turnout of the trucks was on hand for the event, but only practice was completed before the showers hit the track. There wasnt much left undamaged on the No. 1 Country Homes Chevrolet of Kevin Cywinski after the ASA Racing 250 at Lake Erie (Pa.) Speedway. In traditional short track fashion, Ryan Tedesco fended off a beating and banging charge by Chad Wood to win the Erie 100 ASA Late Model Series race at Lake Erie (Pa.) Speedway. Unofficially, the top 10 finishers in the event were Tedesco, Wood, Doug True, Dan Jung, Landon Cassill, Bobby Stremme, Scott Baker, Joey Logano and John Turnbill Jr. There were 13 of the 26 starters finishing on the lead lap. In a post-race inspection following the inaugural ASA Late Model Series race at Madison International Raceway, ASA officials confiscated the engine from the car of Ron Breese Jr., the second-place finisher. After a thorough inspection at Roush Racing, the motor was deemed to be within specifications established by Ford and the ASA. Dick Trickle hasnt raced at Wisconsin International Raceway since 1999, but the track hasnt changed much since then and neither has he. Thats why the 62-year-old Midwest legend thinks he can still be competitive and maybe even win when he makes a guest appearance in Mondays NASCAR AutoZone Elite Midwest Series race. Trickle will drive a Chev-rolet Monte Carlo owned and prepared by Fox River Racing Club late model stock car regular Tim Rothe of Little Chute. The car will resemble Sterling Marlins Coors Light Silver Bullet, but instead of No. 40 will have Trickles trademark No. 99. Rothe expected to have both of his cars ready and race one himself, but when he had only one finished he agreed to let Trickle drive it. The 24-year-old racer from Shakopee, MN admits that Donnie Woller from Merrill could be the driver to beat Saturday night. "He doesn't have many off nights," Farrell said. Justin Diercks of Davenport, IA is coming off one of the biggest race weekends of his career heading into the NASCAR Auto Zone 200 Memorial Day afternoon at the Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna. A last chance race will hit the D-shaped half-mile speedway at 1 p.m. followed by the 200-lap NASCAR Touring race at 1:30 p.m. Qualifying begins at 12 noon. Dick Trickle of Iron Station, NC and a former Wisconsin Rapids resident, will drive a car owned by Tim Rothe of Appleton. The Mid-State Touring Series is a series that was put together for the Limited Late Model division that runs at area tracks. Rod Wheeler of Appleton dominated the Yellow Book USA Midwest AllStar late model stock car opener Sunday afternoon at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna in front of 3,500 fans by winning the Budweiser Spring Classic 100. Driving the Heat-N-Glo Monte Carlo, Wheeler moved into second place behind leader Mark Schroeder on lap 12. 19-year-old Kelly Bires will make his first start in the ARCA RE/MAX Series in the Quaker Steak and Lube 100 at Lowes Motor Speedway on May 27th [where Jayski will be the grand marshal]. Bires will drive for Mike Calinoff [#17 Cup Spotter/comedian] and FitzBradshaw Racing, who have established a joint-venture for this event. Round two of the ASA Late Model Series saw 41 teams head to Baer Field Speedway in Ft. Wayne, Ind., for the running of the First General Homes of Fort Wayne 100, presented by Fort Wayne Vehicle Auction and U.B. Machine of New Haven. Unofficially, the top 10 finishers in the event were Smith, Cook, Dan Lensing, Brian Campbell (who led the first lap, the only other lap leader of the event), Stremme, Scott Baker, Jason Setser, Tony Rosebrugh, Michael Gruenberg and Jack Moore. A very scary incident occurred on lap 9 when Mike Carter in the No. 44 Chevrolet was tagged from behind and turned hard into the wall coming out of Turn 4. As Carter was sliding back down the track he was hid mid-vehicle by Dave Lawrence in the No. 45 CTI/ManonaTire Ford who had no room to maneuver around Carter. Lyle Nowak of Wausau has collected 16 track championships during his racing career, but that career will take a different direction Saturday night at the 141 Speedway when he makes his first start ever in the Yellow Book USA Mid-American Stock Car Series. Nowak has raced primarily at State Park Speedway in Wausau and Pepsi Raceway Park in Tomahawk, His 16 track titles have come in legend cars and late model stock cars. The late model stock car qualifying record wasnt the only half-mile mark to fall during Sundays opening Fox River Racing Club program at Wisconsin International Raceway in Buchanan. The clubs limited late model record also took a tumble, thanks to Jerry Van Handel, who turned a fast lap of 20.284 seconds (around 88.5 mph) to break the mark of 20.292 seconds that was set by last years champion Andy Monday on July 17, 2003. His vehicle failed to meet the minimum height standards, and as a result, Garvey was fined 10 percent of his total earnings for the event and docked 25 driver points. Bobby Gutknecht , driving the TDS Metrocom Grand Prix, held off a last lap charge from Pete Hernandez and Jonathan Eilen to win the 40-lap Yellow Book USA Stock Car Series feature race Friday night at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids, IA. Gutknecht won by inches over Eilen with Hernandez third, George Schultz fourth, defending series champion Bill Prietzel fifth and new track record holder Curt VanderWal sixth. VanderWal blazed around the half-mile paved oval in 19.647 seconds and was among five drivers snapping the old track record in time trials. The fast start to Andrew Morrissey's racing career has been somewhat slowed for now -- but expect the DeForest teen's advancement efforts to start gaining speed toward the end of the season. Plans originally called for Morrissey, who turns 20 next week, to run eight races on the American Speed Association National Tour this season for team owner and Madison International Speedway track owner Terry Kunes. But a lack of sponsorship submarined those plans, leaving Morrissey running in super late model events at MIS -- and perhaps a pair of ASA races later in the year, according to Kunes. Andy Jirik used the outside lane to outrun the competition in the season opening Yellow Book USA Mid-Am Super Truck 40-lap feature Friday night at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids, IA. Jirik finished a truck length ahead of Jamie Farrell and former late model track champion Kevin Korsmo in his first ever super truck start. Bill Prietzel crossed he line in fourth place, just ahead of Vince Wilkinson, Tony Holm, Anthony Brewer, and John Froelich. Joey Logano has buckled up more times than he can remember. The nerves, admittedly, are almost non-existent. Don't let Logano's age - he turns 14 later this month - fool you. Logano has more experience racing, and winning, than most of the drivers he competes against. That might not be the case next Saturday when Logano will attempt to qualify for one of the 32 spots in the American Speed Association Late Model Series season opener at Madison International Speedway.
