Change is on the horizon for the Seymour Tri-Oval Raceway in 2005. The 1/3-mile, clay tri-oval will be converted to a standard oval in time for next season. For decades, the track thrived as one of the top ½-mile dirt tracks in northeast Wisconsin. The track hit its peak in the mid-1970s when Paul Kaczrowski operated the track, with capacity crowds and a pit area chock full of big-name drivers. With its hairpin turn, many teams, mostly late models, stayed away from the track. One year ago, the club took a vote on whether to reshape the oval. It was a tight 50-46 vote. Veteran driver Mike Garvey was to start the Jani-King Minnesota 300 presented by Polaris in second, thanks to the rain-out of qualifying which set the field by owners points. During the pre-race technical inspection, both Garveys No. 17 jani-King Chevrolet and the No. 1 Country Joe Homes Chevrolet of Kevin Cywinski were found in violation of mechanical rules. Consequently, both drivers had to start from the rear of the field, a major penalty considering they had been the front row of the Labor Day race.
