Dirt Racing

In terms of shear car count, the original Bomber division at the Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay may have been the track's most successful class ever.  For several years during the mid-1990s, it was common to average nearly 50 teams on a weekly basis. Continuing to bring affordable alternatives back to the track for competitors, promoter Bryan "Woody" Wodack has announced that a variation of the original Bomber concept will be included as part of the 2005 racing schedule at Thunderhill. A pair of heavy hitters in northeast Wisconsin's dirt late model community have stepped to the plate providing title sponsorship for the 2005 Tri-Track Challenge series. Forest County Potawatomi of Crandon and Seubert Calf Ranches of Dorchester have been named title sponsors of the two year old series, through the efforts of Langlade County Speedway, Shawano Speedway and Seymour Speedway, said series coordinator Ed Bertram. Two of the biggest names in 360 sprint car racing in the upper mid-west are joining forces in 2005 to further own efforts behind the wheel of an all-out outlaw 410 sprinter.  Joe Kouba announced today that he and Jerry Richert Jr had formed a partnership for the 2005 season that will see the #55 in over a dozen events, focusing mainly on IRA sanctioned events around the area. Please don't forget about the benefit for "Smokin Joe" Lebotte. Joe's a racer from Kewaunee who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma more than a year ago. He's undergone two separate bone marrow transplants. His benefit begins this Saturday night, March 19 at 7 p.m at the Rendezvous Pleasure Palace. Joe himself will be arriving sometime after 8:30 p.m. There will be several door prizes and a silent auction from what I'm told. Should be a good time. More Details (03-18-05)

Thunderhill Speedway in Sturgeon Bay, WI has officially announced the return of the Forest County Potawatomi Community as a major sponsor of the track for the 2005 racing season. This will be the third straight year that the Speedway and the Potawatomi Community will partner together to bring a strong five-division racing program on Saturday nights to the Door County Peninsula. N.E.W. Dirt is looking forward to starting a new chapter in the history of dirt track racing in Seymour. Gone is the Seymour Tri-Oval, taking its place is the Seymour Speedway. The Seymour Speedway will be experimenting with a new start time during the month of May as we move race time up to 5 pm from our normal 6 pm start. Brad Mueller tells us he is builing a grand national to run at plymouth, oshkosh and chilton when time permits, its a bulletproof chassis built by Brad Dahmer. Brad says it will be painted old school early 90s blue, white and neon pink. There is the also a chance that Brad will pilot a 360 Sprint car a few nights this season. (03-14-05)

Officials from LuxemburgThe Saturday March 5th World of Outlaw Sprint Series event scheduled at the Manzanita Speedway was rained out. Due to the rain following Friday night's completed program, then the rain received after the gates opened on Saturday night, and then the additional storms overnight and showers again Sunday morning. Speedway are proud to announce that Bobby "Trackmaster" Marquis of De Pere will return to head up the track preparation for the 2005 season. In addition Shawano's Scott Owen has been named the track's new track announcer and public relations director.  This after last season's announcer/pr man Joe Verdegan decided to take this year off after 20 years of work behind the microphone at northeastern Wisconsin ovals. The Lafayette County Speedway will open its 2005 season on April , 2005 with the Wisconsin Dirtstar Series . The Speedway will be operated by MYM Motorsports Promotions, inc. This group collectively have over 12 years in managing and racing management. They will be running the 6 classes run there the last 5 years and a SPECIAL class or event each Friday night. Asphalt Racing

Jamie Iverson and the Iverson Motorsports team will once again race weekly at Wisconsin International Raceway. Jamie will pilot a brand new car which sits atop a new Pathfinder chassis. The car that has been run the last couple of seasons will be run at Norway Speedway weekly. We are told there will be at least one night that Jamie will miss at Norway Speedway in which you could see a past driver behind the wheel. The team will carry some new sponsorship for the 2005 season, watch for details in an upcoming press release. (04-4-05)

Jason Meulemans of Appleton was the "survivor" of the 300 lap compact car enduro race Saturday afternoon at 141 Speedway at Francis Creek. Meulemans started on the pole and spent the first twenty laps battling Todd Hebel and Jim Brooks for the lead. However on lap 21 incidental contact with a lapped car sent Jason to fifth place handing the lead to Brooks. He would lead until lap 39 when David Beyer came to the front . Press Release (04-3-05)

When NASCAR made some sweeping changes in its Weekly Racing Series format over the winter, Charlie Menard nearly made some changes of his own. Menard's plan to run the Wisconsin Challenge Series, the MARS series and some ASA Late Model races at Madison, Hawkeye Downs (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), West Salem and Illiana Speedway (Schererville, Ind.), in addition to about a dozen races at the Fairgrounds Speedway this summer still stands. Spring is Here! It might not seem like it but spring has sprung and the racing season is just around the corner. Team sources tell us if things go as planned Gregg Haese will run the full schedule at Wisconsin International Raceway in 2005. Were told he just got the chassis back from Pathfinder and it will have a new Monte Carlo body and be powered by a B&B Engine. (01-17-05) UPDATE: Team sources confirm Gregg Haese will make a return and has already registered the #67 for Fox River Racing Club action. He will also run all special events at Wisconsin International Raceway. (03-22-05)

At the last couple of meetings the though of hiring someone to do the leg work of getting nightly sponsors was discussed. After lengthy dicussions it was voted in to allow Dan Muenchow do the leg work and work off a percentage. We are now told that the contract was renigged on (by the club) and that Dan isn't currently working for the club. I am sure more discussion will take place at the upcoming meetong on March 28th. (03-21-05) UPDATE from President Brandon Blashe: FRRC submitted a contract with all the terms discussed in meetings between Dan and the FRRC officers, that Dan chose to not sign. The main point of contention from my understanding was the length of the contract. Dan wanted 2 years, FRRC wanted 1 year, and we where unable to come to an agreement. (03-22-05)

Tom Gee Jr. tells us they have finalized their 2005 season schedule. The Patriot Mortgage team plans on running all the Thursday night Thunder events, the Red, White & Blue Series, along with full time in the WCS series. If the snow melts in time, they hope to practice the weekend of April 2nd at the Dells. (03-21-05)

Andy Monday has released his 2005 season schedule which consist of running all events at WIR plus the Wisconsin Challenge Series. (03-20-05)

Madison International Speedway promoter Steve Einhaus announced today that a major contingency program is coming to MIS for 2005. The program will make available a minimum of $50,000 in contingency products / certificates over the course of the season to competitors in Madison International Speedway's four weekly divisions: ASA Late Models, Super Late Models, Midwest / Mid Am Super Trucks, and Area Sportsman. The hot question right now appears to be what is Buco Racing going to be doing this season. We have heard names of drivers that could be behind the wheel, but nothing official. We have tried getting in contact with the team owner, but have not gotten any response back. We have been told by sources that indeed Brian Hoppe's name was one that was being mentioned. (02-12-05) UPDATE: Sources tell us that Tom Gee Jr. had at one time been talking to the Buco Racing team about driving their car. Since than sources tell us the owner of Buco Racing told others that he was working with 2 high profile drivers. Brian Hoppe is one driver and the other is Steve Carlson, we have no more details at this time. (03-1-05) UPDATE 2: Sources confirm that both Steve Carlson and Brian Hoppe were approached by the team, but Steve Carlson told the team "thanks, but no thanks." So it appears as though it will be Brian Hoppe behind the wheel. (03-1-05) UPDATE 3: As we get closer to the season starting, the question still remains who will drive the Buco Racing #00 Late Model at WIR. Although now it appears to be more of a question as to whether the team will even race in 2005. Sources tell us that B & B Racing Engines, the teams engine builder has not received the teams motor for freshening. We will have to wait and see what happenings come opening day. (03-14-05)

The Danes Farms Race team tell us their built a "Special Friendship" while in Florida. They worked hard to keep the #95 in one piece, but still had time to have fun. You will have to wait to see what the team brings to the local track. (03-12-05)

There have been rumors that the 7 time Rockford Speedway track champion (Bobby Wilberg) will make a return to racing the famed 1/4 mile track in 2005.  More to come so stay tuned! Last season we told you about young Matt Byrne and the team has just announced their plans . At age 13, he left go-karting and went into an Allison Legacy Car.  At 13-years old he was the youngest driver to win "Rookie of the Year" title in the Great Lakes Allison Legacy series.  He also finished 2nd place in the championship points that year.  In 2004, he again finished 2nd place in the championship points.  At age 15, the team bought him an ASA Late Model.  In 2005 he will be competing at Madison International Speedway and the team will try and run a few of the ASA Late Model Touring events. Sources tell us Super Stock driver Terry Miller is looking to move up to the Limited Late Model division this season. We understand he is looking at the #24 that Nate Van Wychen drove for Zwiers Racing. (03-7-05)

Jeremy Lepak has a busy 2005 racing schedule planned. He will be splitting seat time between Jerry Gunderman's super late model and Larry & Judy Lepak's super late model. Jeremy's first race of the 2005 season will be the Wisconsin Challenge Series season opener at the Dells Motor Speedway. Racing legend Dick Trickle will once again grace the high banks of the 3/8 mile Elko Speedway, competing in the first leg of the three event ACDelco Super Summer Series, Saturday night, June 26. “I’m teaming up with Country Joe Racing’s Kevin Cywinski which should make for an unbeatable team.  We’re coming to Elko to win,” said Trickle. We noticed both Brett Bauer and Mark Anthony in attendence at the Fox River Racing Club last night, both drivers who haven't raced the last couple of seasons at WIR. After alot of talk at all the monthly Fox River Racing Club meetings about transponder scoring, it appears as though the system will not be used in 2005. (02-20-05) UPDATE: At the meeting last night it was stated that the deal with the local telecommuncations company fell through. The club is still entertaining transponder scoring and is looking at a couple options including renting the system from Matt Rowe, owner of 141 Speedway (03-1-05)

Sources tell us that there will indeed be new lights up at Wisconsin International Raceway this season. All the old fixtures will be taken down and new ones will be put up or there will be 4 towers put up in the infield that will light up the whole track. (02-20-05) UPDATE: We understand Werner Electric is involved with the project and currently doing all the designing. With the new lighting it should remove alot of the wiring in the grandstand area that isn't needed anymore. This years powerplant from B&B Racing Engines has arrived! We are currently finishing mounting the new 2005 ABC Chevrolet Monte Carlo body and will be ready to paint next week. We hear that Matt Martin, (son of NASCAR driver Mark Martin) may very well race at Wisconsin International Raceway for a special event in 2005. We understand that it was up to the insurance company if they would make an exception for one night. (03-1-05)

We're told Tom Spierowski will be back behind the wheel of the #01 Limited Late Model weekly at Wisconsin International Raceway, but we also hear he may very well drive Pete Berken's Late Model. Some say it may just be for the special events, some say the car still needs to be fixed from last season. (03-1-05)

John Meidam and the Meidam Motorsports team will once again carry the Budweiser Tri County Distributing Sponsorship. The team will race weekly at Wisconsin International Raceway, race the Red, White & Blue Series at WIR and will run both Wisconsin Challenge Series races at WIR this season. John will have his car on display at the Fox River Mall the first weekend in April. (03-1-05)

Total contingency awards for the Mid-American Stock Car Series, Inc. divisions went over $400,000 Wednesday, March 30. The current total stands at $400,150 for the Mid-American Stock Car Series, American StockCar League, Midwest AllStar Racing Series Late Models, Mid-Am Super Trucks and Stock Car Classics League. A  $5,000 - to - win Super Truck Nationals race will be held on the high banked half-mile paved oval at I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO Friday night, Sept. 30 as part of the World Cup Weekend at the track. Aluminum Racing Products (ARP) will award one Mid-Am Super Truck racing body and one Midwest AllStar late model body at the combined series banquet Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Leathem Smith Lodge in Sturgeon Bay, WI. Jeremy Miller of Rockton, IL has entered the Five and Drive Auto Sales/Money Mart Financial Monte Carlo for this weekend's Mid-Anerican Stock Car Series opener at the Rockford Speedway in Rockford, IL. Miller, who won five Mid-American Series features last season, will also drive a late model in 2005.  He will be competing Friday nights at Madison International Speedway. Press Release (03-29-05)

Richard Lofy, owner of Performance Specialties Racing (PSR), of Oregon, WI, has posted a contingency award for each fifth and tenth place finisher in the Midwest AllStar Late Model Series beginning with the season opener Saturday night, May 30 at I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO. Each fifth and tenth place finisher will receive a certificate for a four shock dyno test. Press Release (03-28-05)

Nationally known artist Steve Halmo has been commissioned to create a "Best of Mid-America" sketch of all five champions of the Mid-American Stock Car divisions. Press Release (03-28-05)

Three-time American Speed Association (ASA) National Touring champion and former ARTGO champion Kevin Cywinski of Lakeville, MN has announced that he will be competing in the Tuesday Night Shootout at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna, WI Tuesday night, Aug. 2. The night's events will be headlined by a 150-lap American Stock Car League (ASL) feature race on the WIR D-shaped half-mile track. Press Release (03-25-05)

An American Stockcar League 150 will be the featured event for the Tuesday Night Shootout at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna, WI Tuesday night, Aug. 2 at 7:30 p.m. The American StockCar League (ASL) was formed by former Amercian Speed Association (ASA) National Tour teams and Mid-American Stock Car, Inc. at a Feb. 5 meeting. The date became available in 2005 when the former promoter of the race, Game Day, withdrew. Press Release (03-24-05)

Coleman Racing Products of Menomonee, MI has announced a contingency plan for the American StockCar League (ASL) worth $19,500. The awards are in the form of certificates redemable for products manufactured by Coleman. A series feature win is worth $1,000 with a complete Coleman brake package.  A fast qualifying time is worth $500 with a complete Coleman brake package. A feature win with Coleman brake rotors is worth $100 as is a fast time with Coleman brake rotors. Press Release (03-23-05)

Jacob Dolhun has run some very fast high banked tracks before in 700 horsepower race cars.   So, his first appearance ever at the half-mile lightning quick I-70 Speedway at odessa, MO in the American Stock Car League (ASL) season opener on Saturday night, April 30 should be a snap. Dolhun's only problem is that he has very limited paved track experience. He has raced dirt late models on tracks like Eldora Speedway in Ohio, but I-70 is paved. Press Release (03-23-05)

For the 2005 season, (Dan) Lensing plans an all out assault on the 2005 ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts championship. When the 21-year-old has an off weekend, he’ll be running his Ford Taurus at his home track in Madison WI. ASA Late Models (03-23-05)

With Doug Mahlik driving the #15 for Midnite Motorsports in the ASA Late Model series that left the #98 Mahlik Motorsports car open for 2005. According to the ASA Late Model Series website, Doug's brother Nick is registered to drive that car. (03-22-05)

For 2005 Brett (Piontek) will again be driving the Juice Tyme Monte Carlo for Bay Motorsports. Brett will race full time in the ASA Late Model Series, competing for the Rookie of the Year and the Championship titles. ASA Late Models (03-22-05)

Terry Labonte's Sunoco Olds Cutlass will be back on the speedway when the Stock Car Classics League kicks off its 2005 season Saturday night, June 11 at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem, WI. Drivers from the vintage stock car series will take to the half-mile paved oval with many familar former NASCAR Cup, Busch, USAC and short track stock cars. SS Racing team owner Ken Smith announced today that he will compete in the full schedule of the newly formed ASL Series with rookie driver Jarit Johnson. The ASL Series was started earlier this year by Gary Vercauteren and his group, who also operate the Mid-American Stock Car Series. ASL-Midamracing.com (03-21-05)

Veteran stock car driver Butch Mierendorf of Lake Mills, WI is looking ahead to a very busy season. Mierendorf recently acquired the 2002 Mid-Am Super Truck formerly driven by Jeff Steenbergen.  Steenbergen was the rookie of the year in 2001 and won the title in 2002 with a Ford truck,  a season highlighted by a win at Road America in Elkhart Lake. Also in Mierendorf's racing stable will be a Bobby Allison Meineke Muffler NASCAR Cup Monte Carlo which will be run in the Stock Car Classics League. Rounding out his racing plans for 2005 will be some events in the Mid-American Stock Car Series. Press Release (03-20-05)

Lynch GM Super Store, located on Highway 36 North in Burlington, will sponsor the Mid-American Stock Car Series race Saturday night, June 18 at the Lake Geneva Raceway. A race car show, featuring the Chevy Race Team, will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the dealership.   Tony Stewart's NASCAR Monte Carlo will be featured along with a Chevrolet IRL car, a NASCAR Craftsman Truck, a Corvette ALMS road racing car, and a NHRA Cobalt drag machine. Howe Racing Enterprises of Beaverton, MI will award a chassis mid-section to the 2005 champion of the American Stock Car League (ASL). The fastest qualifier at each ASL race beginning at I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO Saturday, April 30 will also receive a $100 Howe Products certificate. Press Release (03-20-05)

The first Stock Car Classics League race doesn't happen until the Yesteryears Racer Reunion Saturday, June 11 at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway.   Interest in the vintage race cars, however, seems to have reached a new level heading into the 2005 season. The overall champion will receive over $3,000 in awards at the Mid-American Stock Car banquet Nov. 5 at Leathem Smith Lodge in Sturgeon Bay, WI. Press Release (03-18-05)

PowerTrain Technology has announced its 2005 contingency plan for American StockCar League (ASL) race teams. The fifth place driver in the 2005 point standings will receive a $500 clutch assembly certificate at the series banquet Saturday night, Nov. 5 at Leathem Smith Lodge in Door County, WI.  The fifth place finisher in each race during the year will receive a $100 product certificate. Baker Engineering of Nunica, MI has released a contingency program for the Midwest All-Star Late Models, Mid-Am Super Trucks, Classic Stock Car League and Mid-American Stock Car Series. 15 year old Landon Cassill from Fairfax, Iowa has announced that he will run the entire schedule in the newly formed ASL Series out of Wisconsin with the Lorz Motorsports team. He will also be running for the 2005 Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year. Landon will be running over 60 races this year with a couple of different race series. Two-time Slinger Speedway late model stock car champion Brad Mueller is headed to MARS. No, he hasn't rented a Mars surface rover. But, he is expanding his 2005 auto racing schedule to include the Midwest AllStar Racing Series (MARS) in addition to his Sunday night trips around the high banked Slinger quarter-mile paved oval. A finalized schedule for the Midwest Stock Car Classics League brings the total number of racing events planned by Mid-American Stock Car, Inc. to 71 for the 2005 season. CTF Chassis of Menomonie, WI will award a new chassis to the 2005 Mid-American Stock Car Series rookie of the year. The first race for series drivers is April 2-3 at the Rockford Speedway in Rockford, IL. CTF Chassis is owned by former Mid-American Stock Car Series champion Rod Brewe.   Brewe is now racing in the Midwest AllStar Racing Series late model division and plans to run the entire 2005 schedule.
