Driving a race car around the high banks of the oval at Slinger is daunting and challenging enough.  Now imagine racing through the X and the possibility of a major collision.  It can be both exciting and nerve wracking.  It can exhilarating yet dangerous.  Either way, once you’ve experienced it, you cannot help but wish for more. Yet in a points based system, consistency always seems to be rewarded more so than the number of wins.  The 2008 season found Aaron Cain leading the way with 8 feature wins, but he fell short of clinching the championship. The 2009 season revealed that Cain was the epitome of dominance in a variety of ways.  Although his win total dropped to 5 feature wins, his overall consistency led to his capturing the track championship. Herbst, you see, has run what is called a “crate” motor — a factory-produced racing engine that can’t be altered in any way — for much of the season. Ford crate motor has created quite a buzz with competitors, fans and even track officials this season. My math, and limited racing knowledge, tells me that 125 pounds is a significant penalty. Full Story in LaCrosse Tribune (07-28-09)

ASA Midwest Tour Labor day 100 wrap-up notes (09-8-09)

A large and enthusiastic crowd cheered as loud as they could when Jamie Iverson stepped out of his super late model after winning the Labor Day 100 at the Norway Speedway, an ASA Member Track. Iverson held off Jonathan Eilen for his third consecutive American Speed Association Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power win at his home track. "This is pretty cool, I guess it wasn't as dramatic as last year," a smiling Iverson said in victory lane. "We can take them any way we can get them. There was a lot of fast cars behind me and I waited for them to come and they never got up close enough." Press Release (09-6-09)

Iverson's luck has been sour, at best, in 2009, and he sits 13th in series points. His season was hampered at midsummer by a violent, 140 mph wreck at Iowa Speedway, a ¾-mile, banked track in Newton.
