GERKE LEADS WIRE-TO-WIRE TO WIN 141 SPEEDWAY MID AM FEATURE
by Joe and Jordan Verdegan
(Francis Creek, WI) May 30 - Daryl Gerke of Whitelaw took the lead at the drop of the green and kept Reedsville's Kyle Bauknecht and company at bay to collect the 35 lap Mid American Stock Car feature at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek Saturday.
Gerke sprinted into the lead at the drop of the green from his outside pole position and quickly sped away from the field. Gerke maintained the lead through three caution periods, one of which occurred with eight laps remaining. On the restart Gerke headed off Bauknecht and Travis Groelle in the final laps to collect his first win of the season. Bauknecht, Groelle, Josh Sand and Dennis Rabas rounded out the top five finishers.
Two Rivers Dave Gauger Jr. passed Josh Sand for the lead on lap 14 and sweated out a pair of caution periods to capture his first, 30 lap super stock feature win. Sand held on for runnerup honors, with Lee Kielpikowski taking third. Manitowoc's Tim Conard recovered from an early spin to finish fourth, with fast timer Kraig Koehler rounding out the top five finishers.
Mishicot's Errol Berry scored a clean sweep in the IMCA northern sportmod division, winning his heat and sprinting to victory in the 20 lap feature.
The main event did not come without controversy, however. While leading, Berry and arch rival Chad Vetting of Valders tangled, sending Berry into a spin. Vetting was black flagged and sent to the pit area. Pulaski's Chuck Grall posted his best performance of the year with a second, followed by points leader Keith Kickbush of Kewaunee, Sheboygan Falls' Rick Kretschmann and Bonduel's Greg Wichman. Green Bay's Todd Hebel passed Jason Willadsen for the lead on lap 9 and cruised to victory in the caution free, 20 lap mini stock feature. Trailing Hebel at the checkers were Willadsen, Jason Novak, Allen Dillion and Kurt Naidl.
Luxemburg's George Paul led wire-to-wire, surviving heavy pressure from Jesse Scheffer of Mishicot in the final laps to win the 20 lap IMCA hobby stock feature.
In the Cretton Enterprises 50 lap sport four triple crown feature, Reedsville's Mike Blashka took the lead at the drop of the green. He kept the top spot through the halfway point, when a caution flew on lap 25. On the restart, two laps later Dave Gauger Sr. and Blashka tangled, drawing a yellow. Both were sent to the tail of the field. Gillett's Aaron Dalton inherited the lead when racing resumed, with Dalton Cherney and Jeremy Hebel giving chase for the lead. Dalton gradually opened up a lead and eventual win.
Racing resumes next Saturday night, June 6 for Manitowoc Heating night, as stock car rides will be provided for the kids. Qualifying begins at 5:30 p.m. with racing getting underway at 7 p..m. 141 Speedway is located 20 miles south of Green Bay on County Trunk "R" in Whitelaw. For more information call 920 863 3377.
