Wednesday, July 18, 2007 (Daytona Beach, FL) – Two NASCAR Nextel Cup Series drivers will return to the track that helped catapult their racing careers on Friday, July 20th. Kyle Busch and Johnny Sauter will return to Madison International Speedway to compete in the Echo Chainsaw/Five Star Stock Car Bodies No Bull 100 presented by Briggs and Stratton and Jon Lancaster Toyota, the ninth event on the ASA Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by Echo Outdoor Power Equipment.
Busch, who sits currently 9th in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series points, will be making his second appearance to Wisconsin’s Fastest Half Mile Oval on Friday night. His first appearance came back on July 28, 2002 when he competed as a rookie in the former American Speed Association National Tour event.
At that event, Busch qualified second, just missing the pole from veteran Butch Miller. He went on to a ninth place finish that day. Current ASAMT Touring Star, Steve Carlson, was the winner of that event.
Busch only competed in one season under the old banner where he finished 8th in points, had 5 top-five and 10 top-ten finishes, and finished second in Rookie of the Year standings to David Stremme.
So far this season, Busch has one win, 4 top-five, and 10 top-ten finishes in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. He also has 2 poles, 1 win, 7 top-five and 9 top-ten finishes in the NASCAR Busch Series.
Johnny Sauter is hoping to turn his luck around at MIS this Friday night.
Sauter, the 2001 American Speed Association National Tour champion, had 10 wins en route to his championship season, but one of those wins was not at MIS. The August 17, 2001 event had Sauter starting 12th and he was working his way to the front when Sauter got together with Scott Hansen on lap 212 in turns three and four. Sauter would recover to finish fifth that night.
He went on to collect the championship and Rookie of the Year honors in 2001. At the same time, he set a lot of records that year with 10 wins, 4 poles, 13 top-3, 15 top-5, and 16 top-ten finishes. He also led 2,039 laps in the 20 race schedule.
Sauter returned to MIS on June 28, 2005 and finished 24th in the Big 8 Series event that was won by his older brother, Tim.
Sauter currently sits 34th in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series driver’s points with one top-ten finish.
He will be appearing at Suburban Wheels on Thursday, July 19th from 4-6 p.m. Suburban Wheels is located at the intersection of Hwy. 51 and East Washington Ave. in Madison.
Sauter will also be one of the driver’s featured on an ABC’s News special called “NASCAR in Primetime.” The series is scheduled to start on August 15th on ABC.
Advance tickets are on sale now at the Series official website at www.asamidwesttour.com by selecting the “Click N Print” logo. Fans will save money by purchasing tickets in advance. “Click N Print” will also pick five (5) random fans and a guest who have purchased advanced tickets and will automatically upgrade them to the Briggs and Stratton VIP area on race day.
Practice will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday with qualifying scheduled for 4:00 p.m. An on-track autograph session will begin at 5:45 p.m. featuring music from “Primitive Culture.” The racing action will begin at 7:00 p.m. The INEX Legends and the MIS Limited Late Model division will also be racing on Friday night.
Madison International Speedway is located about 15 miles south of Madison off of Hwy. 138 on Sunrise Road between Oregon and Stoughton. The track’s website is www.madisoninternationalspeedway.com.
