REUVERS WINS THE ASA MIDWEST SUNOCO SPORTSMAN TOUR EVENT BY A NOSE
By Kari Shear-Carlson
July 12, 2011 - Ted Reuvers won the GrandStay Summer Clash 50 lap feature at Elko Speedway for the ASA Midwest Sunoco Sportsman Tour on Saturday night, July 9th. The race was a nail-biter until the end; one of the most exciting races of the weekend.
The race was run in memory of the driver of the #22, Jerry Thomsen who lost his life over the winter. Family, friends, and fans released black and orange balloons in his honor just as the green flag flew.
Brent Kane led most of the race until Ted Reuvers caught him and kept Kane busy looking in his mirror. "I was leading the whole race except the last couple laps, but I still feel like I won. Reuvers is really hard to beat," said the second place driver.
A caution with less than ten laps to go set the drivers up for a shoot out. Kane restarted on the point followed by Reuvers, James Lindgren, Adam Wiebusch and Kyle Sellner. Reuvers was all over Kane as Lindgren started closing in on his bumper.
Reuvers went high holding Kane to the bottom as they went down the backstretch side-by-side. Reuvers took the lead on the outside with three laps to go. Kane was still fighting back and they touched and leaned on one another going into turns three and four. Kane slid a little bit as they were coming out of turn four and Reuvers won by a nose over Brent Kane.
Third place finisher, James Lindgren, had the best seat in the house. "That was a phenomenal race. Those guys were awesome to watch."
Doug Brown was the fast qualifier, but was unable to start the race. He set fast time on his first lap. Going down the backstretch on his second lap, the throttle hung and he hit the wall between turns three and four cutting his night short.
Current ASA Midwest Sunoco Sportsman Tour driver, Chris Marek finished 13th as he battled through the pack. Marek waited patiently as the #2 of Kyle Kirberger and the #28 of Michael Homan raced side-by-side. As Homan had to back off when the #29 of Scott King slowed on the track, it gave Marek the opportunity to dive under Kirberger and continue to move up through the field.
Only two events remain on the ASA Midwest Sunoco Tour schedule for the 2011 season. The next race is on Friday, August 12th at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids, IA. The ASAMST will join the ASA Midwest SCAG Truck Tour and the American Speed Association® Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment and GrandStay Hospitality.
