Leicht Powers To ASL 150 Win At WIR

By Dean Reller

KAUKAUNA, WI (August 2, 2005) - 18-year-old Steven Leicht is one of the hottest rising stars of racing and he proved it once more as he dominated the ASL 150 at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna. Earlier in the evening, Leicht set fast time and with the series inversion, started fourth in the 20 car field. Pole sitter Bryan Reffner led the charge as Andrew Morrissey tried to take the lead in the opening laps. After a couple of laps of running side-by-side, Reffner solidified his position as Leicht took second. Leicht would lock onto the rear of Reffner as they ran together out front. Leicht looked to the low side several times, but each time was denied by Reffner. On lap 34, Leicht planted his nose down low and pulled off the pass exiting turn two. Morrissey then came to life as he moved by Reffner as well to take second. Reffner slowly backpedaled as Leicht and Morrissey kept it close up front as the mandatory halfway caution flag waved.

Leicht took control at the start of the second half as Reffner regained second from Morrissey. Several cautions for minor incidents kept the leaders out of lapped traffic as the race for third, fourth and fifth became heated between Morrissey, Ryan Mathews and Terry Schoppenhorst. Leicht would open things up in the last 50 laps, disposing himself of Reffner, while the next several spots tightened up. Reffner had a mirror full in second as Morrissey, Mathews and Paul Paine were right together. When the checkered flag finally waved, Leicht crossed the line by 10 car lengths to take his second win of the season and first ever at Wisconsin International Raceway.
