Snyder Scores Governor’s Cup At I-94 Raceway
First Series Win For Former Track Champion
By Dean Reller
SAUK CENTRE, MN (July 30, 2005) - Trent Snyder scored the biggest win of his career as he dominated the Midwest Allstar Racing Series (MARS) Super Late Model, Minnesota Governor’s Cup 100 at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre. A record 31 cars were in attendance and Snyder led the 24 car starting field to the green. Outside pole sitter Chris Grimes held second, before Jon Lemke pulled up behind and began to pressure Snyder. Lemke would pull alongside, before something broke on his car, sending him spinning and crashing hard into the turn three wall and fence. Lemke was shaken, but uninjured. The damage to the fence brought out a red flag for repairs. After a thirty minute delay, the race resumed on lap 18. Snyder held the restart as Andy Hanson moved to second and he began to pressure Snyder for the lead. Ryan Mathews, Nate Thiesse, Jeff VanOudenhoven, Trevor Stewart and Blake Bjorklund ran not far behind, in the lead pack.
Hanson and Mathews swapped second through the middle stages of the race as Snyder continued to show the way. VanOudenhoven took second, before two late cautions slowed the action. The final restart on lap 79, saw Snyder still holding the lead as VanOudenhoven began to turn up the heat. With 14 laps to go, it became a side-by-side race for the lead as Snyder held his ground out front. Heavy lapped traffic looked to play a role in the finish, but Snyder threaded his way through as Hanson tried to work his way back into second. Upfront, Snyder kept pace the rest of the way, holding off VanOudenhoven and Hanson, as he led every lap in scoring his first career MARS win.
Rich Snyder was on top of his game as he won the Modified Feature. Starting outside the front row, Snyder grabbed the lead from the start. Jeff Rohner slid into second and followed Snyder’s moves. With about ten laps remaining, Rohner moved to the low side of Snyder as he looked for the lead. Snyder held off the challenge as he went on to his second win of the season.
Rob Thurston hasn’t raced his Legends car in almost a year, but he proved he still has the touch as he won the Great North Legends Feature. Thurston and Jon Lewerer battled it out on the opening lap as Thurston pulled ahead. Fourth starting Tim Brockhouse quickly went to the front and on lap four, he squeezed past into the lead. One lap later, Zac Davids spun to bring out a yellow. On the restart, Thurston was able to retake the lead, but one lap later Brockhouse slid by to take the lead back. Thurston kept his foot in it and he snatched the lead back the next time around. The race for the lead allowed Matt Hendrickson and Jaycen Brockhouse to close in on the front pair. The final lap saw Brockhouse make one last run at Thurston as they exited the final turn. The cars crossed the line nearly even, but Thurston made it across first taking the win by .015 seconds, the closest finish to date at the I-94 Raceway.
Jerry Messer was back to full speed as he won the Thunder Car Feature. Pat Henry and Lee McDougall raced for the lead, but Patrick Amelung came flying by to take the lead on lap three. Amelung’s car got really loose as he was losing fluid on the track and his stay at the front was over as fast as it began as he dropped out on lap five. This handed the lead back to Henry, with Messer right behind. Messer wasted no time in disposing of Henry as Nick Panitzke followed along. A late caution for the tangled cars of Jason Schroepfer and Doug Olmscheid bunched the field. This gave Panitzke the opportunity to get by Messer. The leader held his ground however as Messer hung on for the win.
Andy Mayavski put on another great run as he won the UCAR Feature. Chad Burke and Dan Bolstad raced for the lead as Bolstad came away with the position. An early caution slowed things down, but when the green waved again, Bolstad had Mayavski turning up the heat. Mayavski took the lead on lap four as David Bolstad crept up on his brother Dan for second. David was able to get by Dan, but out in front Mayavski was in high gear as he pulled away and cruised to the win.
