MULLEN MAKES IT FOUR-IN-A-ROW IN LUXEMBURG IMCA MOD ACTION
by Joe Verdegan
(Luxemburg,WI) May 30 - Seymour's Brian Mullen continued his
mastery of Luxemburg Speedway's third-mile, clay oval Friday night by taking
the lead away from Mike Coel on lap 19 and scoring his fourth straight 25
lap IMCA modified feature.
A total of 123 cars took part in the program. Among the field were 32 IMCA
modifieds, 39 IMCA stock cars, 24 street stocks, 16 IMCA hobby stocks and
12 sport fours.
Coel sprinted from his pole position into the lead at the drop of the green
with Robert Waechter and Mike Klenz in tow. During the first five laps Coel
and Waechter pulled away from the pack. A lap five caution flew when Mike
Klenz and Dave Zeitler tangled in turn 1. On the restart Danny Deau tangled
with another car in turn four, sending Deau's car into a rollover. Deau emerged
unscathed, driving his car back onto pit lane and eventually back into the
race.
Mike Mashl pulled up alongside Coel to battle for the lead on lap nine, but
Coel fought off his challenges. for the lead on lap nine. By lap 13 Coel began
pulling away from Mashl, leaving him to battle for second with Todd Dart.
Dart wrestled the second spot away from Mashl on lap 15 and went to work on
Coel for the lead. By lap 18 Mullen had squirted through the field and into
second, working the high line. Heading under the flagstand for lap 19 Mullen
darted inside Coel to take the lead. Mullen easily pulled away from the field
to record his fourth straight triumph. Coel hung on for second in his best
finish of the year. Todd Dart, Mike Mashl and RM Van Pay rounded out the top
five finishers.
Horicon's Jeremy Christians scampered past Brett Wenzel for the lead with
two laps remaining to claim his second 22 lap IMCA stock car feature.
The lead changed hands no less than three times in the first 10 circuits,
with polesitter Josh Massart, Shawn Olson and Brett Wenzel all taking turns
with the lead. By the contest's halfway point Christians had charged through
the pack from his ninth starting spot into second, tailing the leader Wenzel.
By lap 16 Jason Czarapata joined the chase for the lead, as he and Christians
were glued to Wenzel's rear bumper. With two laps remaining Christians slipped
underneath Wenzel and cruised to victory. Wenzel's second place finish was
his finest finish of the year. Rod Snellenberger, Kyle Frederick and Czarapata
rounded out the top five finishers.
Zion, Illinois' Tony Schlei chewed away at leader Joe Hegnet's half-lap lead,
nipping Hegnet at the checkers by a fender to win his second 15 lap IMCA hobby
stock feature. The contest went green-to-checkered. Hegnet took second, followed
by Evan Madden, Ryan LeMieux and Keith Kickbush. Madden was later disqualified
for a technical infraction, bumping everyone up a spot and giving fifth spot
to Ed Anschutz.
James Tebon of Algoma grabbed the lead on lap nine and went on to win his
first 20 lap street stock feature of the season. Trailing Tebon at the checkers
were Fred Davister, Phil Hiles, David Hoerning and Tom White.
Denmark's Todd Welsing swept sport four action, claiming both his heat and
the 10 lap feature.
Next Friday night will feature the second appearance of the season of the
WISSOTA late models. The "Battle of The 'Burg II" will pay out $1,500
to the winner. A full program of IMCA modifieds, IMCA stock cars and IMCA
hobby stocks is also on tap. Racing starts at 7 p.m. For more information
