MULLEN MASTERS LUXEMBURG IMCA MODIFIED FEATURE by Joe Verdegan
(Luxemburg, WI) June 4 - Defending track champion Brian Mullen
of Seymour grabbed the lead on lap three and carefully threaded his way through
lapped cars to score the caution free, 25 lap IMCA modified feature win at Luxemburg
Speedway Friday night.
Kewaunee's Shawn Kilgore scored a clean sweep for the second straight week,
passing Mike Franzke for the lead on a lap one restart and holding off Travis
Van Straten to collect the 22 lap IMCA stock car feature of the season. Algoma's
Ed Anschutz matched Kilgore's feats by sweeping action in the IMCA hobby stock
division.
A season high 137 cars signed in to do battle. The field included 38 IMCA modifieds,
37 IMCA stock cars, 17 IMCA hobby stocks, 33 street stocks and 15 sport fours.
Mullen wrestled the lead away from Jeremy Jacobs on lap three and quickly whisked
away from the field, encountering lapped traffic at lap 10. RM Van Pay, starting
sixth on the field, sifted his way through traffic into second by lap 12. Despite
Mullen's heavy traffic the former champ was able to keep Van Pay and company
at bay to collect his first win of the season. Van Pay settled for second, followed
by Eric Van Iten, Benji LaCrosse and Jacobs.
The IMCA stock car main was only one lap old when Kyle Frederick and Troy DeGrave
tangled in turn four, drawing a yellow. Kilgore shot underneath Franzke for
the lead on the restart and quickly built up a full straightaway lead. Van Straten,
who started 12th in the field, sliced his way through the pack, taking second
away from Charlie Kroll on lap 10.
Van Straten whittled away at Kilgore's lead, catching and passing him on lap
17. Kilgore repassed Van Straten one lap later and never looked back, scoring
the win. Van Straten, Frederick, Dave Bouche and Greg Gretz rounded out the
top five finishers.
Fish Creek's Scott Reinhardt led every lap en route to a caution free, 20 lap
street stock feature win. Hometown driver Fred Davister broke through traffic
at the race's midpoint but was able to muster a second place finish at the checkers.
Rick Naparella, Mike Pierrard and Von Echenson rounded out the top five finishers.
Anschutz fought off Keith Kickbush in the closing laps to capture his first
15 lap IMCA hobby stock feature of the season. Anschutz also won his heat, scoring
the clean sweep. Kickbush settled for second, followed by Tony Schlei, Evan
Madden and Tom Brumlic.
Luxemburg's Tyler Smith edged Bonduel's Greg Banker at the line for the 15 lap
sport four feature. Banker, Damon Scott, DJ Jorgenson and Todd Welsing placed
second through fifth, respectively.
Action was halted during the second IMCA stock car heat when Dave Hoerning barrel-rolled
his racer on the frontstretch after colliding with George Gerbers. Hoerning
was shaken but otherwise all right.
.Next Friday June 11, Seubert Calf Ranches will host the third annual "Battle
of The 'Burg III" for dirt late models. A $1,750 top prize awaits the winner
of the event, which will be run with the Wisconsin Dirt Late Model Association
(WDLMA) sanctioning. A full program of IMCA modifieds, stock cars and hobby
stocks will also be run.
