Haseleu, Spoonmore, and Kalbus Win at MIS
Nathan Haseleu picked up his fourth Weaver Auto Parts ASA Late Model feature win on Budweiser Night at the races on Friday, July 15. Somonauk, Illinois' Jeremy Spoonmore topped the field of twenty two Mid American Stock Cars while Jay Kalbus earned his first-ever feature win at MIS in the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman.
The Bryden Motors Super Late Models and the Rockweiler Insulation Midwest Truck Series had the night off.
Notable Notes: Jeremy Miller of Rockton, Illinois, set a new track record for the Mid American Stock Car Series. This was round two of the Triple Crown Series for the Mid Am cars at MIS. First round winner Jonathan Eilen did not fare as well as he dropped out of the feature. John Vig Jr. of Shakopee, Minnesota, made his way to MIS once again. John has raced with us in the ASL event as well as in both the Mid Am car and truck races.
Tyson Grossman, Lyle Messinger, and Tom Reents in the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman and Brad Kossow in the Weaver Auto Parts ASA Late Models made their 2005 MIS debuts. Jay Kalbus becomes the sixth different drivers to win a feature in the Area Sportsman division in 2005. This has become a very competitive field with Carey Hensel, Ryan Goldade, Mark DePorter, Luke Padfield, and Scott Lawver already picking up wins in 05.
New point leaders have emerged in both the Weaver Auto Parts ASA Late Models and Bryden Motors Area Sportsman. Thanks to his victory on Friday night, Nathan Haseleu now sits atop the ASALM field as he moved ahead of Bobby Wilberg. Mark DePorter of Fort Atkinson has become the new leader in the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman division.

Major News from ASA Late Model Series
LEXINGTON, Mich. (July 14, 2005)  – The ASA Late Model Series will grow in 2006 to include a national “Super Series” schedule as well as the creation of two regional touring circuits. The sanctioning body has come to an agreement to purchase the Southern All-Stars Pro Series, which will become part of the new plan.
The regional tours will now include an ASA Late Model North Series and an ASA Late Model South Series in addition to the national tour, which will be known as the ASA Late Model Challenge Series.
“We’re thrilled to be taking the next step in the evolution of the ASA Late Model Series,” said series president Ron Varney. “The response from competitors, team owners and fans has been tremendous since we launched the series two years ago. This new direction takes the concept to the next level and will provide the opportunity for teams to compete on a regional basis with our two support tours as well as on a national level with our ‘Super Series,’ the ASA Late Model Challenge Series.
The ASA Late Model Challenge Series schedule is expected to include several traditional short tracks that have been synonymous with ASA-sanctioned racing over the years. An official schedule is expected to be announced later this summer, but the slate’s focus will be on short track racing.
“The strength of the ASA Late Model Series is on the short tracks of the country,” Varney said. “We plan on building on that tradition and creating a new national series that will include many premier short tracks around the country that are familiar to both fans and drivers.”
The ASA Late Model North Series will run under the direction of Steve Einhaus, promoter of Wisconsin’s Madison International Speedway.
“The ASA Late Models have been a solid addition to our line-up at Madison International Speedway, both as a weekly division as well as with the touring series,” Einhaus said. “We feel the support is very strong for the creation of a Midwest-based regional series that will support the national tour and I’m very excited to be a part of the plan with Ron and the ASA Late Model staff.”
Plans for the ASA Late Model Challenge Series national tour include the creation of a television package as well as national marketing opportunities for sponsors. Chicago-based PSP Communications, a media/communications company, has been retained to coordinate activities including television production, marketing, promotion and media relations.
“We’re excited about the potential of bringing the ASA Late Model Series to the next level,” said Pete Pistone, president of PSP Communications. “We plan on expanding the awareness and exposure of the series and sanctioning body through television production, increased media awareness and an improved online presence.”
Additional details including schedules, television plans and marketing/promotion initiatives are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Madison International Speedway will play a major role in the future of ASA Late Model racing. Look and listen for exciting updates.
