MIS E-News Week of July 14, 2008
By John Wells
Here is the latest from Madison International Speedway
Happy Birthday goes out to Bob Schmelzer who turns 80 years young on July 17th. Make sure to stop by the pit gate and say hi to Bob on Friday night. Bobs picture was in the Sunday edition of the Wisconsin State Journal.
A special thank you to all of the track employees who make the weekly racing program at MIS possible. Some of these positions might be more visible to the fans than others, but it truly takes a team effort to put everything together to make a race night possible. For most of the employees, the night at MIS comes after a full day of work.
Eric Huenefeld will return to the mic this Friday night. Eric is a talented announcer who logs a lot of miles in the summer.
Just announced: On August 8th MIS will be hosting the Kevin Fillner Memorial for the USST Super Trucks. Fillner, a former owner of Madison International Speedway, was instrumental in the organization of the Midwest Truck Series that began at MIS back in 1997. Kevin passed away a couple of weeks ago at the age of 44.
This Friday at MIS
Its Clear Channel Night this Friday at Madison International Speedway with racing action scheduled for the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models, Bryden Motors Area Sportsman, Roto Rooter Bandits, Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends, Hobby Stocks, and Pure Stocks.
The limited late model feature will take on a slightly different look this week with a 50 lap feature that will be divided into two 25 lap segments. After the first 25 laps, the cars will leave the track and return later in the night. The leader after 25 laps will roll the dice to determine the invert when the race restarts.
Points and pay will be determined by the finishing order at the end of 50 laps. The race will pay $800 to win and $250 to start. There have been seven limited late model events at MIS in 2008 (5 weekly shows and 2 Big 8 Events) with seven different winners.
Big News for the Kids: During intermission on Friday night we will have our annual coin drop with thousands of coins and tokens on the track.
The Sabroft family will also be enjoying the Turn Four Kids Club VIP Package on Friday night.
Looking Back at Last Friday Night
What an exciting finish in the Weaver Auto Parts Super Late Models as Nathan Haseleu passed Steve Rubeck coming out of turn four on the final lap to take the win by .012 seconds. It was definitely one of the closest finishes you will see at any track.
Congratulations also go out to our six other feature winners: Bret Schmidt in the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman, Max McNamara in the Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends, Chester Ace in the Roto Rooter Bandits, Randy Nottestad in the American Short Trackers, Rodney Mundt in the International Four Cylinders, and Caylie Duncanson in the Bandoleros.
Great to see Eugene Gregorich Jr., Tim Hintz, Bret Schmidt, Pat Richgels, Terry Biddick, Mark Dewey, Waylin Willman, Cody Townsend, and Tom Palma join us for the first time in 2008 along with several drivers from the ASA Late Model Series Northern Division.
The International / American Short Trackers put on a great show on the half-mile and will be added to the schedule on September 5th as part of Tribute to America Night. These cars will also be racing at the MIS Miller Lite Fall Classic.
Several drivers are coming close to notching their first wins of the season. Steve Dickson in the Area Sportsman, Frank Kreyer in the Super Late Models, and Cory Skolaski in the Bandits are knocking on the door in their respective divisions.
ASA Late Model Series Coming to MIS
Mark your calendars for Friday, July 25th when the ASA Late Model Series Northern Division comes to MIS for the Mayor of Madison 100. The ticket prices are $15 for adult and $5 for kids - 5 and under are free.
They also will have group tickets at discounted pricing and weekend tickets for both Madison and Rockford for $20 for both nights.
Heres the latest from Matt Prieur of the ASA Late Model Series.
Border Wars is coming! Madison International Speedway and Rockford Speedway are up next for the ASA Late Model Series Northern Division.
Lexington, Michigan (Monday, July 14, 2008): In years past holding two events on the same weekend in the ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts, the Lexington, Michigan-based series has held those events close to the home base of the series.
Previously the Mid-Michigan Doubles Weekend would highlight the schedule as the ASALMS would stay in the home state of Michigan for a doubleheader weekend. In September of 2007, a Doubleheader Weekend was attempted in the great state of Georgia with success.
ASALMS Co-Founders / Presidents, Ron and Sandy Varney wanted to keep the tradition of at least one doubleheader weekend alive and thought perhaps a change would be even more successful! For the 2008 season, what was previously the Mid-Michigan Doubles Weekend has been moved out West and is now known as "Border Wars!"
As for what two tracks would host such a prestigious weekend, two stood out as two great facilities over the years for the ASALMS and were natural selections for the first installment of what is sure to be a very popular weekend of ASALMS racing! In addition, given the fact that these two tracks are very different in driving styles should make for a great weekend of racing!
Day One of the ASA Late Model Series Border Wars will commence on Friday, July 25, 2008 as the fast 0.500 Mile High-Banked Paved Oval of the Madison (WI) International Speedway, located South of Wisconsin's Capital City of Madison, in Oregon, Wisconsin will host the running of the Border Wars Day I and the Mayor of Madison 100.
ASALMS Border Wars Day II will be held the following day; Saturday, July 27, 2008 as the ASALMS Northern Division contingent will convoy South on I-39 to the famed 0.292 Mile High-Banked Paved Oval of the Rockford (IL) Speedway, just outside of Rockford in Loves Park, Illinois for Border Wars Day II and the King of Rockford 100.
Entry Forms for both events are NOW AVAILABLE and due at the ASALMS Home Offices in Lexington, Michigan by Monday, July 21, 2008 to avoid the late fees.

All participants will be receive scholarship money. A total of nearly $400,000 is available for participating ASAES teams at MIS.

WOW what a finish. This has been a super season so far. Keep it up guys
We prayed last week for the Miller family and we were reminded that we are put of a cool family at the race track that cares for each other in special ways. I have been asked a couple of times to speak on the family at the race track. It is a unique sport. Instead of sending the kids off to the soccer field or other sport the dads and moms are along side the sons and daughters in the evenings working on the cars and at the race track together. It is cool in many ways. The relationships, the time together. It also keeps kids off the streets and the parents know where they are. Too often in American we send-off the kids and then wonder why we have some of the problems we have. God talks about family too. Look at this GREAT passage: Titus 3:3-8 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone. (from NIV)
This is the best of all families. It is Gods family. We meet in Heaven to praise God forever. DONT MISS OUT!!!
Do you know for sure that you are in Gods family? Are you living as an obedient child?
Have a great day in the SONshine,
Todd
