Scott Broughton Captures the Checkered Flag at MIS

Wilberg, Ace, Ambrose, and McNamara Also in Victory Lane
By John Wells

Oregon, WI (Friday, August 6, 2010)-  On a picture-perfect night for racing, Scott Broughton picked up the win in the 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models for the third time in 2010.  Bobby Wilberg won again in the Ho Chunk Gaming Area Sportsman while Chester Ace (Roto Rooter Bandits), Todd Ambrose (Club LaMark Hobby Stocks), and Max McNamara (Pellitteri Waste Systems Legends) were also winners.

It was also a big night for students in the ASA Educational Series as $90,000 in scholarships to Ohio Technical College was presented at intermission.  Vern Fagerberg Jr. of Bloomingdale, Illinois, won the Promoter's Award and netted a $20,000 scholarship.

It was also Kids' Club Night with hundreds of prizes including five bikes presented to the kids.  MIS would like to thank all of the sponsors for the Kids' Club including many of the race teams.

Broughton's On Top of His Game in Late Models

Scott Broughton was the best in the show tonight as he won for the third time by holding off the 23 car field in the 40 lap feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Late Models.  "We had a really good car tonight and got things done," said Broughton from victory lane.

Chad Stevens and Dale Nottestad ushered the field to the green flag with Stevens jumping out to the early lead after some exciting side by side racing.  Stevens would continue to lead until he slowed coming out of turn two on lap 4 opening the door for Broughton, Ryan Goldade, and Bobby Wilberg who quickly grabbed the top three spots.

The caution would come out on lap 5 for a spin in turn four setting up the first double-file restart with Broughton on the inside and Goldade on the outside.  Broughton would continue his leading ways once the green waved again with Wilberg taking over second when he got to the inside of Goldade on lap 7.  Two laps later another spin would bring out the yellow flag with Wilberg now lining up alongside Broughton on the restart.

It would be a great restart by Broughton with Goldade moving back to second followed by John Baumeister Jr. and Wilberg.  By lap 15, Broughton had built up a five car length lead and definitely sending the message to his fellow competitors that he was the man to beat.  A good race for second between Goldade and Baumeister Jr. saw the latter take over the runner up position on lap 21.

By lap 26 Broughton had caught the tail of the field and began working his way through lapped traffic like a morning commute on Madison's Beltline.  This allowed him to build up a ten car length lead by lap 29 before the caution would come out on lap 33 for another spin and negate his advantage.

With Baumeister Jr. lining up to the outside and Goldade and Wilberg behind in row two, Broughton was able to continue his lead from the inside and never relinquish it enroute to victory lane.  Goldade would finish in second place followed by Wilberg, Nottestad, and Kevin Knuese, who picked up a career high fifth place finish.  Baumeister Jr. would have to settle for sixth followed by point leader Jeremy Miller in seventh.

Miller's lead in the championship chase is now just four points over Wilberg with Broughton in third.  "It's going to be a good point race.  I am looking forward to it," said Broughton as the division is down to four feature races yet to run in 2010 before the weekly racing season ends.

Riddle set fast time for the second week in a row with a lap of 18.971.  Heat victories went to Vern Fagerberg Jr., Brady Liddle, and Shaun Scheel.

It's Wilberg Again in Area Sportsman

Bobby Wilberg won the 15 lap feature for the Ho Chunk Gaming Area Sportsman for the seventh time in 2010.

Greg Baxter held the lead after the first lap before the caution flag came out for a spin.  After the restart it would be Russ Nicholson's turn to take the lead as he led the second lap before being passed by Robert Hansberry on lap 3.

Hansberry's lead would be short-lived as Wilberg worked his way up to his bumper and moved to the inside going into turn three to take over the lead.

With Wilberg building his lead, Stephen Scheel would take over second place from Hansberry on lap 7.  But all everyone could do was try to keep Wilberg in their sites and it wasn't easy as he had built up a huge lead and drove his way to victory lane.  Scheel would finish second followed by Hansberry, Mike Taylor, and Nicholson.

"We had four or five good laps in the car tonight and after that it was pretty loose," said Wilberg, who once again donated his trophy to one lucky young fan.

Wilberg was fastest in qualifying with a lap of 20.471 with Scheel winning the heat.

Inside or Outside It's Ace

Known for his line around the "Ring of Fire" on the outside, Chester Ace proved that inside or outside he knows his way around the track as he picked up the win in the fourteen car Roto Rooter Bandits field in their 20 lap feature.  The win was number seven in 2010 for the defending champion and current point leader.

Jason Coker and Joe Solem set the pace as the field came to the green flag.  Coker would get the early lead before relinquishing it to Kenny Storkson on lap 2.  Storkson would be challenged by older brother Mike on lap 3 before a pair of 7's, Pat Richgels and Lee Haag, took over second and third respectively.

On lap 6 it became three wide for the lead with Haag taking over the top spot on the back stretch.  On lap 7, Ace, who started fourteenth, was somehow able to make his way to the inside to clear three cars, was up to second and ready to challenge his brother in law.

The caution flag came out on lap 10 for a spin.  Haag would continue to lead after the green waved again but Ace was closing quickly.  On lap 11 Ace pulled to the outside of Haag and the two raced side by side for three laps before Ace made the outside pass on lap 14.

But Haag was not about to give up.  The two battled it out side by side with Haag regaining the lead on lap before Ace getting it back one lap later.  Ace and Haag would fight it out the rest of the way with Kyle Padfield joining the mix with Ace winning by inches at the stripe.  Haag would finish second followed by Padfield, Jon Coker, and Richgels.

"I'm not sure what really happened.  All of a sudden I got several bumps from behind and the next thing I know I'm up here running with Lee (Haag).  Lee's got a really good car so I knew it would be tough.  We both raced each other clean and we had a lot of fun out here," said Ace in a post race interview.

Ace was fast qualifier with a lap of 15.455 with the Coker brothers, Jason and Jon, winning the heat races.

Ambrose Cruises to Victory Lane

Todd Ambrose, who along with teammate Brad Luck are the defending champions, added to their 2010 point lead by winning the 12 lap feature for the very competitive Club LaMark Hobby Stocks five car field.  For Ambrose it was his third feature win of the season.

Scott Luck and Terry Ciano Jr. brought the field to the green flag with Luck getting the early advantage.  Don Fassett was up to second after the first lap with Ambrose taking over the second spot before the caution flag came out on lap 3 for a spin involving Fassett.

On lap 4 Ambrose was able to pull to the outside of Luck and after some good side by side racing eventually took over the lead coming out of turn four and started to put some ground between himself and the field.

A good battle was taking place behind Ambrose between Ciano Jr., Chad Knaus and Luck which was eventually won by Ciano Jr.  But nobody would have enough for Ambrose who cruised to Indian Motorcyles of Chicago Victory Lane.

"When we got here tonight we really struggled.  We made some changes and got the car where we wanted it," said Ambrose.  Ambrose also dedicated his trophy to his racing hero, Jimmy Back, who passed away in July.

Ambrose set fast time with a lap of 21.549 and Luck won the heat race.  Fassett was disqualified following post race inspection.

McNamara Sets the Legends Pace

After getting a slow start in 2010, two-time defending champion Max McNamara easily won tonight's feature and notched his fifth win of the season by topping the fifteen car field in their 20 lap feature.

Teammates Dave Terrafino and Dave Wastak brought the field to the green flag, but it was the action behind them that brought out the caution right from the start.  The cars of Tommy Jones, Branden Beverley, and Tim Narr all tangled up in turn three and would find their nights ending early.

Terrafino would take the lead after the restart with Tony Moyer in second and Wastak in third.  McNamara would move up to third on lap 3 and would overtake Moyer for second one lap later and set his sites on Terrafino.  Terrafino would be no match tonight as he was unable to hold off the hard-charging Mad Max who pulled to the inside of the leader on turn four and took over the point.

From this point it was all McNamara who quickly built up a sizeable lead.  Andy Jones would move up to second on lap 6 with Moyer back into the top three on lap 10.  With McNamara building a twenty car length advantage it was clear that the only challenge he would have would be with lapped traffic.

McNamara easily maneuvered his way through traffic as Jones and the rest tried their best to catch him.  Kyle Justis moved past Moyer on lap 14 for third, but this race was all McNamara's as he easily picked up the win.  Jones who finish second followed by Justis, Moyer, and Terrafino.

In victory lane McNamara was asked how he avoided the early wreck.  "They all stayed on the high side of the track so it all worked out for me on the inside.  It was a nice run again tonight so I'm happy with the results."

McNamara made it a clean sweep with a qualifying lap of 14.135 and a heat win.  Moyer was also a heat race winner.
