BAILEYS HARBOR, WI -- The Mid-American Stock Car Series, Inc. will sanction a record 66 auto racing events during the 2003 season. The group is planning 14 events in the Yellow Book USA Midwest AllStar Late Model Series (the same as 2002), 17 events in the Yellow Book USA Mid-American Stock Car Series (up three from last year), 17 events in the Yellow Book USA Mid-Am Super Truck Series (up four from last year), and 19 events in the newly formed Midwest Stock Car Classics League.
The new division features collector type former NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series car, along with older stock cars from the old USAC and IMCA touring late model series. "Basically we have former NASCAR machines from 1957 to 2001 in the new division. We're bringing these cars to Midwestern paved track ovals. They have been previously run on road courses," noted Mid-American Series president Gary Vercauteren. The series got its start at the Rockford Speedway in April of 1993 and consisted of one division. The super trucks were added in 1997 and the late models were started in 1999. A number of the series drivers have moved on to the American Speed Association (ASA) and some are racing in the top levels of NASCAR.
