Iverson and Rothe Split WIR wins at WIR, Prietzel getsVercauteren trophy in Mid-Ams

KAUKAUNA, WI -- Jamie Iverson of Escanaba, MI and Tim Rothe of Appleton captured 50-lap Yellow Book USA Midwest AllStar late model stock car wins at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna Saturday night before 3,000 fans in the 33rd annual Red, White & Blue State Championship Series. Rothe leads the overall Red, White and Blue points going into the series finale Saturday night, August 21 at WIR with 153 points. Lowell Bennett of Neenah is second with 152 and Terry Baldry of Omro is third with 150. Rounding out the top five are Mike Gardner of Gladstone, MI with 147 and Jeff Van Oudenhoven of Kimberly with 141. Rod Wheeler of Hortonville, the Red, White and Blue point leader going into the race, dropped to seventh with 138. Wheeler, however, still has a mathmatical chance of winning the overall title on August 21.

Robb VanderLoop of Kaukauna led the first seven laps before suddenly pull off the half-mile paved track with mechanical problems. Iverson immediately shot into the lead with Andy Monday of Appleton and Dave Feiler of Sun Prairie in pursuit. Terry Korth spun and clipped the third turn wall on lap 13 to bring out the caution flag. Bennett begn to make a move to the front when the race was resumed and took over second from Feiler on lap 30. Iverson, however, had the Dow Dawson Trucking sponsored car as sharp as it ever has been at WIR and won by a comfortable margin over Bennett. Baldry was right on Bennett's bumper at the finish to grab third while Feiler has one of his best performances ever at WIR with a fourth. The former MARS Series winner was followed by Danny Fredrickson of Elko, MN and Rothe. Rothe had earlier paced the 34-car late model field with a qualifying lap of 19.497.

Pete Vandermolen of Oshkosh was the early pace setter in the second 50-lap feature. Yellow Book Series regular Brian Johnson Jr of South Beloit, IL slipped inside Vandermolen to take the top spot on lap three. Jeremy Lepak of Wausau rode along in second postion until rothe shot past him on lap 10. Rothe and Johnson battled for the lead with Rothe getting past coming off the fourth turn after moving Johnson over. Johnson's car got loose, but he was able to hang on. Mike Gardner also drove inside of Johnson for second while he was regaining control of his car. Rothe won the race by one car length over Garnder. Terry Baldry, who was advancing through the field, had to make a pit stop to repair front end damage to his car. The stop took the ten-time Fox River Racing Club champion out of contention for the win. Following Rothe and Gardner were VanOudenhoven, Bennett and Jim Duchow of Appleton. VanOudenhoven was able to maintain his lead in the overall Yellow Book USA Series going into a swing into Minnesota in two weeks at Fergus Falls Raceway Friday night, July 23 and I-94 Raceway Saturday night, July 24.

Prietzel scores Yellow Book USA Mid-Am win after top two finishers are disqualified In the Yellow Book USA Mid-American Stock Car division, Bill Prietzel of Franklin won the Harold and Regina Vercauteren Memorial 30 Saturday night at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna after top two finishers Jeremy Miller of Rockton, Il and Shawn Utphall of Racine were both disqualified due to techincal violations, Miller's car was too low in a post-race inspection and Utphall's had illegal ball joints. Prietzel led the 31-car Yellow Book USA Mid-Am field in qualifying with a time of 21.054.

In the feature race, Bobby Hacker grabbed the early lead until Miller wheeled past on lap eight. Utphall quickly moved into second. Two caution periods slowed the pace midway through the event. The first came when Lyle Nowak's engine expired and the car burst into flames coming down the front stretch. The safety crew was able to get the fire extinguished and Nowak was not injured. The second caution flag flew when former series champion Rod Brew had a tire go down along the backstretch and he was not to get back to the pit area. Prietzel and Yellow Book USA point leader Peter Hernandez then had a spirited battle for what appeared to be third place. Prietzel got past Hernandez with a few laps remaining for what proved to be the winning move. Hernandez was award second while Brett Piontek of Green Bay came through with his best finish of the year with a third spot. Hacker, of Loves Park, IL, was fourth, Bobby Gutknecht of Oak Creek fifth and Ron Weyer of Jackson sixth.

The next race for the Yellow Book USA stock car is Saturday night, July 17 at Elko Speedway in Elko, MN.

Big wreck in limited lates The biggest pileup of the night occured in the limited late model 30-lap feature, Five cars were elimited on lap eight in a grinding wreck in turn three and four. Chirs LaRocque's car appeared to have sustained the most damage. Also eliminated in the wreck were Gary Bock, Jerry Van Handel, Kyle Cales and Mike Held. A.J. Miller was also involved, but he was able to continue. Nate VanWychen of Kaukauna drove his Dodge Intrepid to the win over Jay Kessera of Little Chute. Gary Natrop of Kaukauna was third and Matt Derricks of Appleton fourth. Ed Howard of Kaukauna looked like the 15-lap Sizzling 4 division feature winner, but he was disqualified with illegal tires. Joe Wittmann of Appleton was declared the winner. Terry Van Roy of Darboy took home the victory in the 15-lap figure 8 feature.
