KAUKAUNA, WI -- The Midwest Stock Car Classics and Vintage
Modifieds will be part of the final leg of the 33rd annual Red, White &
Blue State Championship at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna. Qualifying
begins at 5:15 p.m. with racing at 7 p.m. The Stock Car Classics return for
the second year to the WIR half-mile paved oval featuring models such as1957
Chevies, 1963 Fords and 1970 Plymouth Superbirds mixed in several heat races.
Series defending champion Chuck King of Lombard, IL drives a former Tommy Houston
NASCAR Busch Series Thunderbird while this year's point leader Chris Loberg
drives a 1975 short track Camaro. Gary Stein of Northfield, MN, winner of a
recent event at the Milwaukee Mile, will be driving a former Dave Watson USAC
1972 Buick Skylark which was the winningest car ever on The Mile.
Other leading drivers expected include John Vaasch of Racine in a 1971 Dodge
Charger, Vaughn Gerke of South Beloit, Il in a 1957 Chev, Bob Barfknecht of
Rosemount, MN in a 1956 Ford, Pat Loppnow of Burlington in a 1979 Camaro, Jerry
Ruehlow in a 1992 Monte Carlo, Sam Duvall of Racine in a 1957 Chev, Mike McCormick
of Kaukauna in a 1963 Ford, and Mike Stein of Lakeville, MN in a 1977 Camaro.
The Vintage Modified Club will present former Milwaukee Stock Car (MSC) modifieds
that race at Hales Corners, Beaver Dam, Cedarburg, State Fair Park, Slinger
and Wilmot in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The MSC modifieds put on some of the
best competition ever witnessed on short tracks anywhere in America with many
of the drivers racing five or six times a week. The modifieds will be presented
in a pre-race display and will parade around the half-mile oval.
Fans are encouraged to bring cameras to snap photos of the classic
race cars at approximately 6:30 p.m. when both divisions are scheduled to be
on display of the front stretch of the half-mile track.
The final leg of the Red, White & Blue State Championshop
will feature the drivers of the touring Yellow Book USA Midwest AllStar Series
in twin 50-lap features along with preliminary events. Limited late models,
sizzlin fours and figure 8s will also be included in the program.
The track is located at the corner of Highway 55 and County
Trunk KK, three miles south of Kaukauna. Free camping is offered for traveling
