ELKHART LAKE, WI--Jamie Farrell of New Prague, MN won the 40-mile Yellow Book
USA Mid-American Stock Car and Super Truck race on the four-mile road racing
course at Road America in Elkhart Lake Sunday. Farrell, driving a 2004 Ford
super truck, won by four seconds over Brett Piontek of Green Bay in a 2004 Chevrolet
Monte Carlo stock car. Farrell broke Dick Trickle's one-lap qualifying record
the day before with a lap of 2:29.388 in a field of 31 cars and trucks. He started
11th on the grid as the lineup was partially inverted. John Froelich held back
Bobby Gutknecht and Peter Hernandez for the opening three rounds, Froelich,
of Chippewa Falls, exited the race with a flat tire. Jeff Steenbergen then took
over the top spot for a lap in his Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The 2002 Road America
winner, however, received the black flag for leaking oil. Farrell took the lead
as Steenbergen went to the sidelines. "We've been fast here before, but
minor mechanical things held us back at the end," Farrell said. Piontek
said his brakes faded somewhat at the end of the forty mile race. "We could
catch him coming off the corner and down the straights, but he had the edge
going in," Piontek said.
The Yellow Book USA Mid-Am stock cars and super trucks both
head to The Milwaukee Mile Saturday, August 29 for separate events.
