(Plymouth) The smell of brats frying and the sound of engines firing up were sure signs that there was once again life at the Plymouth Dirt Track this Saturday at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds. After a three week hiatus due to weather, fans and drivers returned to the track and found its family friendly enviroment welcoming. The four divisions in rotation for the evening were led off by the Sprints. Grand Nationals, Late Models, and Outlaw Compacts followed up. Both the Grand National and Outlaw Compacts had extended A-main features.
Sprint cars featured forty drivers in four heats, two B-mains, and one twenty-five lap A-main feature. T.J. Luedke of Plymouth beat Leroy Ostrowski for the first heat, while it was Jim Melis who took the checkers over Earl Possi (Escanaba, MI) in the second heat. Tim Melis picked up the win in the third heat over Kenjay Fiedler. And in the fourth and final heat race, Al Schlafer (Sussex) showed his son Danny Schlafer how to get it done for the final heat win. Danny finished second.
In the first of two B-mains, Terry Marten pulled out for the win over Brian Portschy (Oostburg) and Brian Johnson, but all three drivers raced their way into the A-main. Josh Walter picked up the win in the second B-main with Adam Miller (Plymouth) and Dave Lisowe finishing second and third for the last of the transfer spots.
Tim Melis was the winner of the A-main feature. TJ Luedke, Kenjay Fiedler, Leroy Ostrowski, and Al Schlafer rounded out the top five in the Sprints feature race.
Shane Wenniger and John Sauermilch both rolled their sprint cars in seperate incidents on the night, both drivers, thankfully, were ok.
The Grand National division was the second in the rotation for the night. Brad Mueller put his No. 5 car in victory lane after a last lap pass over fellow Random Lake driver Jeremy Sauter in the first of four heat races. Brad Lubach (Elkhart Lake) beat Luke Scholten (Oostburg) in the second heat, and "Uncle" Brain Kaat (Plymouth) beat Loren Lubach in the third heat. Brad Dahmer picked up the checkers in the fourth and final heat over Troy Theobald.
Doug Teunissen won the B-main feature and the first of four transfers into the extended A-main feature for the Grand National division. Will Sorce was second, Matt Yancey was third, Justin Danes was fourth. All of them picking up the transfers.
In the thirty lap A-main feature, Jeremy Sauter, who has had vapor lock issues in his engine prevent him from winning an A-main in previous nights of racing at Plymouth, beat Brad Lubach to the line for the win. Brad Mueller was third,Jamie Gauger was fifth.
Late Models were third in the evening rotation with two heats and a 25 lap A-main feature. Bret Sievert picked up the checkers in the first heat over Mark Zimmerman. In the second hat, Bill Rezutek took the win with Ron Stroika following him to the line for second.
Russ Scheffler took his car to the point in the A-main feature and beat Rick Scheffler for the win. Scott Specht was third, Kyle Odekirk was fourth, Dan Sorce rounded out the top five.
There three heats and an A-main for the Outlaw Compact division. Travis Moehring beat Steven Weber in the first heat. Sam Burhop beat Jay Riemer in the second, while Michael Zitzer won the third heat over Justin Schmidt.
Corey Edler of Cascade beat Weber in the 20 lap A-main feature for the Outlaw Compacts, with Jason Juech finishing third, Jay Riemer in fourth, and Jason Voss in fifth.
In the point standings Brian Portschy has a ten point lead over Tim Melis in the Sprint Division. Brad Lubach leads Jeremy Sauter by six points in the Grand Nationals. Rick Scheffler is three points ahead of Scott Specht for the Late Models. In the Outlaw Compacts Jason Juech and Steven Weber are tied for first with 196 points. Plymouth Dirt Track continues its regular racing season next weekend, Saturday June 16. Gates open at 4:30 with racing to start immediately following the pre race ceremonies at six.Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students 12-15 years old, and children under 11 are free if accompanied by an adult.
