The final point race of the season took place at The Raceway at Powercom Park in Beaver Dam, WI on Powercom Corporation Night on Saturday night. Track champions were crowned in five divisions with the honors going to Jay Schraufnagel of Beaver Dam in the Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson/Buell Modifieds, Tim Doehling of Winneconne in the Northwoods Paper Converting Grand Nationals, Trevor Schmidt of Hartford in the Dodge Central Credit Union Stocks, Eric Barth of Sauk City in the Gibbsville Cheese INEX Legends and Mike Mueller of Waupun in the Wallys Auto Dirt Devils.
The modified 20-lap A-Main proved to be one of the best of the season. Dave Hochschild of Muskego grabbed the lead at the start. Russ Reinwald of Plainfield moved up quickly to challenge and dived to the inside of Hochschild coming out of turn four. Reinwald powered his way into the lead on lap three and began to open up a lead while using the outside groove as the rest of the field battled for position. Jay Schraufnagel, who started in the fifth row, began to pick his way up through the pack. A spin by Jim Zdroik of Big Bend brought out the caution on lap ten closing the field up behind Reinwald. On the restart Reinwald continued to lead only to have the caution flag wave on lap thirteen for an incident involving Marc Caswell of West Allis and Dave Schoenberger of Beaver Dam. Reinwald led the field for the restart with Schraufnagel right behind. Mike Sandholm of Oconomowoc had moved up and was now in third. As the field raced into turn one, Schraufnagel moved to the bottom of the race track to challenge for the lead while Reinwald continued to run up against the cushion. The intense battle was interrupted on lap sixteen for a caution for the cars of Ralph Schneider of Hartland and Bill Tandetzke of Milwaukee in turn four. On the restart Reinwald again opted for the high groove while Schraufnagel went low. Schraufnagel edged ahead to take the lead on lap seventeen. Reinwald, however, fought back and moved back out in front. A spin by Bruce Horst of Hartford in turn four brought out the caution setting up a one lap dash to the finish. Reinwald and Schraufnagel continued their two groove battle for the top spot on the final lap with Schraufnagel making one last attempt at Reinwald as the two exited turn four and dashed to the finish line. As the checkered waved, it was Reinwald edging out Schraufnagel for the win at the line. It was the second win of the season for Reinwald. Mike Sandholm followed in third ahead of Lee Sohns of East Troy and Frank Firari of Lowell.
Roger Lee of Wind Lake took over the lead on lap two and cruised to his sixth win of the season in the grand national division 20-lap A-Main. Tim Doehling drove to second. Troy Weich of Fond du Lac recovered from an early race spin to finish in third ahead of Josh Borden of Port Washington and Jeff Owens of Randolph.
Nate Schepp of Beaver Dam dueled with Kelly Brown of Friesland in the stocks 20-lap A-Main. Schepp wrestled the lead away from Brown on lap sixteen and went onto score his fourth win of the season. Trevor Schmidt moved up to finish in third ahead of Don VanderGalien of Wautoma. Jerry Kope of Oshkosh followed in fifth.
Aaron Fiscus of Sun Prairie jumped into the lead at the start of the 20-lap legends A-Main. Joel Wyttenbach moved up quickly from the third row to challenge Fiscus. Wyttenbach was able to get by on lap seven and never gave up the top spot in picking up his third win of the season. Fiscus finished a strong second with Eric Barth of Sauk City following in third. Adam Reed of Slinger drove to fourth ahead of Ron Smith of Speedway, IN.
Jon Schultz of Belleville raced into the lead on lap eleven of the 20-lap dirt devils A-Main. Schultz led the rest of the way in recording his sixth win of the season. Mike Mueller drove to second ahead of Ron Koenig of Fox Lake. Kip Klawitter of Berlin came across the line in fourth. Jeremy Schwoch of Waupun was fifth.
B-Main victories were registered by Brian Crapser of Racine and Paul Parker of Kaukauna in the modifieds and by Jeremy Schwoch in the dirt devils.
Modified heat race wins were claimed by Lee Sohns, Larry Walter Jr. of New Berlin, Dave Hochschild, Frank Firari and Jim Zdroik. The grand national heat race wins went to Roger Lee and Troy Weich. In the stocks division, Derrick VanderGalien of Oshkosh and Tim Fletcher of Burnett drove to the heat wins. Aaron Rake of Beaver Dam and Eric Barth were victorious in the legends heats.
