Despite Record Snowfall, Rockford Speedway Set to Open Early April

Rockford, IL- The Rockford area accumulated a record snowfall this December, January and February when a total of 65.1” (wxrx.com) of snow blanketed the ground. Surpassing the previous record of 63.4” measured during the winter of 1978-79, the recent flakes have caused some concern amongst area race fans that the start of the 2008 season may be pushed into May. Despite the record amounts, Rockford Speedway still plans on opening their 61st consecutive season on Sunday April 6 with the running of the Stone and Double T 200 Enduro.

“All of us at the track grew up in the Midwest, we are used to dealing with snow,” stated Rockford Speedway General Manager Gregg McKarns. “We have had snow in victory lane, a blizzard during qualifying, fresh snowfall just days before an event; we have had our share of snow related issues here at the Speedway. With the recent warm temperatures we have seen large amounts of the snow melt, there are rivers running through the parking lot, ticket booth, infield, just about everywhere. As the water runs, our chances of running become more and more likely.”

While the April 6 event can be contested in less than desirable conditions, it is the April 13 running of the 31st annual Spring Classic featuring the Big 8 Series Late Models and Mid-American Stock Cars that many are pointing to. Crews have already been running pumps and creating irrigation canals through the thick ice to allow the snow melt to reach the various drains throughout the property. “I remember riding in the plow truck as a kid the day before Spring Classic and the races got in. Not that we want to challenge Mother Nature, but deep down I think everyone is ready, including her, for racing to begin in the Midwest,” added McKarns.
