Anvelink cruises to fourth WISSOTA Late Model feature win at Shawano Speedway
By: Bert Lehman

Shawano, WI (Aug. 28, 2010) – With only a couple of weeks of racing left in the season, Terry Anvelink won his fourth WISSOTA Late Model feature at Shawano Speedway, while Eric Scribner won his fifth IMCA Modified feature. Shawn Wagner won his third IMCA Stock Car feature, and also clinched the track championship in the division. A.J. Diemel won his seventh FASTRAK Late Model feature, while Tracy Wassenberg won his third IMCA Northern SportMod feature.

Terry Anvelink overtook M.J. McBride for the lead in turns three and four on the opening lap of the WISSOTA Late Model feature with Paul Parker, Justin Ritchie and Jim Rychtik following. Parker moved to second on the next lap, with Ritchie following suit on the third lap. As the race approached the midpoint, Anvelink built himself a small lead while Troy Springborn and Ron Berna joined the top five.

A couple of cautions slowed the action just past the midway point of the race. One of the cautions involved Springborn hitting the wall in turn one, ending his night. Anvelink continued to lead on the restart with Gordie Seegert Jr. vaulting to second and Parker, Berna and Chris Oertel following. Berna pressured Parker for third late in the race, but couldn’t make the pass. It was all Anvelink as he cruised to the victory.

Eric Scribner sped into the lead over Michael Bailey Jr., Jerry Wilinski, Tim Van De Hei and Brandon Czarapata in the IMCA Modified feature. Bailey Jr. spun on the fourth lap, bringing out a caution. Scribner continued to lead on the restart with Wilinski, Van De Hei, Czarapata and Jason Czarapata following. Brandon Czarapata grabbed the third spot on lap seven and set his sights on Wilinski.

Brandon Czarapata pulled alongside Wilinski midway through the race. The two raced side by side for two laps with Wilinksi holding the advantage. On a lap 13 restart Czarapata made the move past Wilinski for second, but there was no catching Scribner who won the feature for the second straight week.

In the IMCA Stock Car feature Barry Van Straten took the lead on the second lap. A couple of laps later Devin Snellenberger challenged for the lead but was fended off. A lap six restart saw Nate Michonski take the lead with Shawn Wagner following. Michonski, Wagner and Mitchell Stankowski raced three-wide on lap eight when the final caution flag waved.

Wagner took the lead on the restart with Michonski, Brandon Czarapata, Larry Karcz Jr. and Stankowski following. Czarapata took the second spot and caught Wagner a couple laps later. With Wagner racing the high groove and Czarapata down low, the two raced side by side for the remaining laps of the race. In the end it was Wagner taking the win, and the track championship.

Zack Drews led the first five laps of the FASTRAK Late Model feature when A.J. Diemel made the high-side pass for the lead in turn two. Once in the lead Diemel began to pull away for the field, leaving Drews, Justin Hirt, Jeff Wickersheim and Dave Fieber scrambling for position. Hirt moved to second on lap nine, with Fieber taking the third spot one lap later.

Diemel had a close call while lapping a car on lap 14. The caution came out on the next lap bunching up the field. Fieber overtook Hirt on the restart for the runner-up spot, but there was no catching Diemel who cruised to the win.

In the IMCA Northern SportMod feature Andy Kleczka led the first four laps before being overtaken by Tracy Wassenberg. Wassenberg pulled out to a slight lead as Jason Jach made his way by Kleczka for second and Clint Forstner joined the top five. Forstner made his way up to third when a caution came out with six laps remaining.

Forstner vaulted into the lead entering turn one on the restart, only to have Wassenberg battle back in turns three and four to retake the lead. A couple of more cautions over the next two laps slowed the action.

Wassenberg continued to lead on the restart, but Forstner fell to fifth with Matt Oreskovich moving to second, Cody Hudson to third and Jason Guyette to fourth. That’s the way it ended with Wassenberg racing to the win.

The Speedway will host its final night of racing in 2010 on Saturday night, Sept. 4 during the Shawano County Fair. The racing action gets underway at 6 p.m. For more information about Shawano Speedway visit www.shawanospeedway.net.
