Slinger, WI-May 29—Dennis Prunty, of Lomira, won the E.H. Wolf & Sons late model 80, Sunday night at Slinger Super Speedway. The win was Prunty’s first of the 2005 season. Defending track champion, Gary Lamonte, of West Allis, won the Midwest Sportsman feature while Jason Feyereisen, of Random Lake, was the winner of the Midwest Modified headliner.
Dave Teske, of Richfield, and John Mueller, of Hubertus, brought the 20-car late model field to the green flag. John Mueller got the jump on the field and led Teske, Mark Bitzan, of Menomonee Falls, Pete Wiedmeyer, of West Bend, and Prunty at the completion of lap one.
The first of two cautions flew on lap six for a spin involving Donavan Morgan, of Oconomowoc, and Randy Schuler, of Mequon. Both were able to continue.
Teske shadowed John Mueller before moving around him and taking the lead on lap 12. A John Mueller bobble allowed Prunty to get by and assume the runner-up position and quickly set chase towards leader Teske.
It took Prunty just five laps to move past Teske. Once slipping to second, Teske was under immediate pressure from Fred Winn, of Sussex.
Former Slinger Super Speedway track champion Conrad Morgan, of Waukesha, was on the move and cracked the top five by the events halfway point. Two-time, and defending track champion, Brad Mueller, of Random Lake worked his way to the top five on lap 48.
The final caution of the event, a spin involving Slinger drivers Tony Strupp and Mike Egan, tightened the field and set up a 30-lap battle to the finish.
Shortly after the restart, Morgan’s great run came to an end when his car suffered a fuel pick up problem. Brad Mueller, meanwhile, advanced to third and was on the move.
With ten laps to go, Prunty charged up the back straightaway with Winn and Brad Mueller in tow. As Brad Mueller was making a run on second place, Winn’s machine suddenly broke, forcing the charging Brad Mueller to lock up the brakes on his potent machine. Brad Mueller kept his car off the wall, but by the time he recovered, Prunty pulled away to a 10-car length advantage.
Brad Mueller ran out of laps and had to settle for runner-up honors. David Prunty, Wiedmeyer and Lowell Bennett rounded out the top five.
Gary Lamonte took the lead of the Midwest Sportsman main event on lap 23 when leader Tim Schmitt bobbled coming off of turn two. Schmitt’s machine suffered mechanical gremlins a lap latter, sending his car into a spin, bringing the events only caution out.
Second place runner, James Swan, of Lake Geneva, made a run on Lamonte as the pair raced to the checkered flag, but came up a half-car length short. West Bend driver Brad Keith, Collin Bamke, of Slinger, and Scott Ascher, of Sussex, rounded out the top five.
Jason Feyereisen took the lead from Hartland’s Russ Grade on lap 10 and held off a determined Dale Prunty, of Allenton, to capture the Midwest Modified feature. Fast qualifier Steve Schulz, of Waukesha, settled for third in the race that ran caution free. Grade and Sussex driver Wes Biswell rounded out the top five.
Ed Wolf was the winner of the Port-A-John Guest Car race, Jim Schmittinger won the Spectator Elimination race in a 2005 Corvette while Willy VanKamp won the Figure 8 night cap.
Racing action resumes at Slinger Super Speedway, June 5 when Enders Construction presents a full race program highlighted by a 75-lap late model feature. The evening will also see the crowning of a new speedway queen with the 2005 Miss Slinger Super Speedway pageant. Ladies interested in the Miss Slinger Super Speedway pageant are urged to contact the speedway office at 262-644-5921.
