OSHKOSH, WI - For 16 laps of Tuesdays American Auto Sales
Street Stock feature event at the Powercom Speed Zone Rich Garb was in his own
league.
A caution during lap 17 changed that, though, as Garbs car failed to start
when the field was reset and he was sent to the tail of the pack. That gave
the lead to Dale Averkamp who settled into the top spot and then held on to
win the 20-lap A-main event. Joe Roe of Winthrop Harbor, IL, topped the Interstate
Racing Association sprint car A-main while Shawanos Jasper Drengler was
victorious in the Dirt Devil finale.
Held in front of the largest crowd of the season at the track,
33 sprint cars, 29 street stocks, and 19 Dirt Dev ils signed into the pit area.
The program was the lone appearance of 2004 for the IRA sprint cars at the track.Garbs
lead in the street stock main was erased when a tire rolled onto the track off
of turn two on lap 17. The race, which had gone green for the first 16 laps,
then changed dramatically.Garb was sent to the tail as his car had to be push
started as the field was reset. At the same time Mark Schultz, who was running
in the top five, encountered trouble with his car and began to backslide in
the field.Averkamp worked his way through the last four laps, which saw three
more caution flags appear, and held off a determined Jerry Kope to take the
win. Trevor Schmidt came home in the third spot over Tim Reichenberger and Ken
Feavel.
Roes win in the 25-lap sprint car A-main came after he started in the
front row. Never challenged during the race, Roe faced many slower cars in his
trek to victory lane but no one was able to close up from behind and give him
a run for the win.Mike Reinke, who started ninth, drove to second early in the
race but could get no closer than five car lengths on the leader. He would settle
for second over Scott Neitzel, Travis Whitney, and Mike Kercher. Drenglers
win in the Corporate Impressions Dirt Devil A-main came after a spirited battled
with Loren Rangeloff. Rangeloff led the first seven laps of the feature race
with Drengler giving chase. Drengler would snag the top spot and continue to
lead Rangeloff over the next four laps before the caution waved for debris on
the track. Rangeloff regained the lead after the restart but would surrender
the spot on lap 13 to Drengler and chase him to the checkered flag. Mike Mueller
finished third over Dave Wilkins and Alan Schmidt. Racing action continues at
the Powercom Speed Zone on Tuesday night, July 6th with a full program. The
first green flag will fall at 7:00 pm.
