Cool Weather, Hot Action
May 17, 2005

On a night better suited for ice racing, the pits were again jammed packed. Early in the night, it appeared as if the cars were racing on ice as the heat action was caution filled as drivers adjusted to a track much different than the week before. With overnight rain on Monday the track prep crew had their work cut out for them and they delivered a smooth track.

The Grand Nationals would begin the night's feature action with Troy Weich and Terry Van Roy leading them to the green flag. It would Van Roy taking the early advantage and began to pull away from the pack. Tim Doehling, looking for his second straight features win, would lock up in an early battle with Weich and Larry Richards, as they would go three wide for second. Doehling would grab the second position and begin tracking Van Roy. Doehling would eventually catch VanRoy and they would engage in a great side by side battle for the lead. Doehling would gain the upper hand and grab the top spot down the backstretch. Meanwhile, further back Dan Wirl was charging hard and picking up positions moving up to the third spot. The Checkered flag would fly with Doehling hanging on for his second win at the Powercom Speed Zone. Van Roy, Wirl, Weich and Richards would complete the top five.

The Gibbsville Cheese INEX Legends would take the track for their first A Main of the year at the Powercom Speed Zone and pick up right where they left off last year with another great show. This event would turn into a three car battle royal with Joel Wyttenbach, Aaron Rake and Joe Johnson battling for the lead in every corner of every lap. Wyttenbach would eventually win out and take the top spot leaving Johnson and Rake to battle for second. A late caution would bunch the field up for a dash to the finish but Wyttenbach would not surrender the top spot. Following Wyttenbach across the line would be Rake, Eric Barth, Kevin Brill and Adam Reed. Johnson would slip back and finish 7th after his strong early run.

The Budweiser Modified division would roll on the track for what always proves to be a great A Main and tonight it would be no different. Mike Sandholm would make my job difficult, as from the drop of the green he was gone. Sandholm would charge out to a straight away lead and let the rest fend for second. The battle for second would turn into a true classic as Jay Schraufnagel, Brian Mullen, and Eric Scribner would each pick a groove and race three wide for a majority of the race. Schraufnagel would win the battle and move into second and slowly begin to catch Sandholm. When the yellow flag came out with five laps to go it seemed as though Schraufnagel had Sandholm right where he wanted him. Actually, the opposite was true and Sandholm had Schraufnagel right where he needed him, behind him. On the restart, Sandholm again drove away and captured the win. Scribner would grab second position late followed by Schraufnagel, Sean Jerovetz, and Brian Mullen

The Charter Communication Stock car feature event was would have a tough act to follow as they took center stage. Tim Reichenberger would take a page from Mike Snadholm and leave the field from the start. Reichenberger would not have it as easy though as Jerry Winkler would challenge him side by side for the lead but Reichenberger would have nothing to do with giving up the lead. Winkler would fall back to battle for second with Adam Pugh and Mike Rauchel. Just when it looked as though the outcome was set, the caution flag would fly as Jasper Drengler tangled with the outside wall in corners three and four. On the restart, Reichenberger maintained his top spot with Pugh, Winkler, Ken Feavel and Rauchel completing the top five.

The Signmakers Dirt Devils feature belonged to Bryan Monday. Monday took off to a lead of almost ½ the track and made it look easy. The second place
battle would gather the attention of the crowd as two, three, and four way battles took place for the position. Jon Schultz, Loren Rangeloff, Mike Mueller, Ron Koenig, and Patrick Klawitter would wage this battle. Caution would fly with five laps to go and the competition would be brought to the back bumper of Monday, however, that is as close as they would get and Monday would go on to win the feature event. Koenig would grab second with Rangeloff, Mueller and Jeff Lemiesz rounding out the top five.

Racing actions continues on May 24th with WDLMA Late Models returning along with the Budweiser Modifieds, Grand Nationals, Signmakers Dirt Devils, and
the Charter Communication Stock Cars.
