STURGEON BAY, WI: Darren Otto overcame an eighth row starting spot to win the season ending Street Stock Slam Saturday night at the Thunderhill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay.
While the spotlight was on the street stocks, the track's other divisions joined the show in support. Mike Cole in the modifieds, Shawn Olson in the stock cars, Joe Hegnet in the hobbies and Chad Williams in the 4 cylinder class all spent time in victory lane as the 2003 season came to a close.
16 drivers took turns drawing for starting spots in the street stock 30 lap headliner, and it was Otto who grabbed the un-coveted 16th position. The division's 2003 rookie of the year, Scott Reinhardt, was on the other end of the spectrum. Reinhardt drew the pole position, a spot he quickly parlayed into the lead. Along with a $600 winner's purse, each lap at the point netted the leader another $20.
Reinhardt was able to pace the 22 car field for five laps. He relinquished the lead to 2000 Slam champ Tom Daubner on a restart on lap six. Daubner was running third when the caution flew, setting him up on the outside of the second row with Chilton Speedway regular Kevin Damrow inside. Daubner's outside pass for the lead was a move that would come back to haunt him not once, but twice, over the course of the next six laps.
Securing second, Damrow moved to the high line and finished off Daubner with an identical pass on lap nine. Damrow's stint as the point man was a short one, as his engine let go on lap 11, with fluid turning the third turn into a skating rink. Damrow slid sideways and was collected hard by Dan Simon and then Troy Wilson. All three battered machines were done for the night.
Kevin Jandrin was set up on the outside line of the second row for the ensuing restart. Jandrin was in the process of using the same path to the lead as Daubner had used when another caution flew after only a lap. It proved to be Jandrin's undoing, as he was scored second with Otto third. Now Otto was in position to ride the outside line, and he wasted little time doing it. In just two laps, he took the lead from Daubner for good. The Carlsville veteran was able to stay within a couple car lengths for most of the final 18 laps, until he faded late. David Hoerning won a race long battle for third between Brian Koch, Jeremy Wiitala, James Iverson, Fred Davister, Reinhardt and Jandrin, but ran out of time just as he was catching the lead duo.
Two-time Slam winner and 2003 track champion Troy Muench succumbed to engine failure while running third on the sixth lap.
Otto's win was worth $980.
Tony Herbst gave chase for all 15 laps, but it was Cole leading flag to flag to win the modified feature.
In the stock cars, Jeff Vlies used a restart on lap four to gain the lead from Dave Bouche. Olson circled outside four laps later to make the winning pass en route to that division's feature victory.
Hegnet sat back as Dan Davister and Wayne Moore raced for the lead in the hobby stocks. Moore took command on lap three, holding the top spot for eight laps. Hegnet, the 2003 track champ, used an outside move to edge into the lead for good on lap 11.
Williams dominated both the heat and feature in the 4 cylinder class to score a clean sweep.
The event marked the final night of racing for the season at Thunderhill.
